Body Cams To Soon Be On All Mpls. Cops Responding To 911 Calls

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Starting this fall, every Minneapolis police officer who responds to a 911 call will wear a body camera.

The department began issuing cameras in July. The move came after years of studies and input from the community.

The city says the cameras will improve the department's transparency and accountability.

Officer Justin Churchill said the biggest benefit so far has been in gathering and retaining evidence, especially in high-stress calls.

"We respond, we ask questions, sometimes you miss an answer," he said. "Sometimes you miss a detail. The great thing is we can go back and review and see what details we missed."

At least 40 police departments across the state already use body cameras.

Burnsville was the first in 2010.
