2 Officers Cleared In Killing Of Stabbing Suspect
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Two Minneapolis police officers will not face charges after the fatal spring shooting of a stabbing suspect.
Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced his decision Monday not to charge officers Eric Malmberg and David Robins in the April 4 killing of 50-year-old Raul Marquez-Heraldes.
"All of the police officers at the scene acted correctly and bravely," Freeman said, in a press release.
The county attorney said that the officers only used deadly force when they realized Marquez-Heraldes was holding a man hostage inside an apartment on 2120 Minnehaha Avenue.
Police saw Marquez-Heraldes with his hand on a knife that was plunged into the back of Alan Coleman. The attack left Coleman hospitalized for six days.
The officers shot Marquez-Heraldes several times, Freeman said. He was treated at the scene following the shooting and later died at the hospital. His blood tested positive for high levels of methamphetamine.
Chief Janee Harteau, of the Minneapolis Police Department, said she fully supports the officers involved in this case.
"While every situation is unique, the officers responding to this call faced an extremely difficult and quickly evolving situation," she said in a statement. "Their heroic actions saved the life of an innocent person."
The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigated the shooting, which the county attorney's office reviewed for possible charges.
