Talking Points: Keith Ellison And The DNC
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Democrats are not just licking their wounds, they are pointing fingers.
The progressive wing of the party says the blame belongs to party insiders for manipulating the system to make sure Hillary Clinton beat out Bernie Sanders in the primary.
The WikiLeaks revelations forced Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz to resign as DNC chair in July. She was replaced by interim chair Donna Brazile, who, in another email leak, it was revealed that she gave Clinton debate questions before one of her debates with now President-Elect Donald Trump.
Outraged progressives, including Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, are pushing for Rep. Keith Ellison to head the DNC. Moderates are pushing for former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, who ran for president in 2004.
Political analyst Larry Jacobs, who was a guest on WCCO Sunday Morning, said Ellison might not be the best fit for the party's needs.
"To me, when I look at the map, it was the failure to connect with white voters and with voters in more competitive upper Midwest, Midwestern Rust Belt states," he said. "Is that really where Keith Ellison is going to resonate?"
Ellison isn't commenting directly on a run for the DNC chairmanship.
In a series of national Sunday Morning TV appearances, Ellison says he will have an announcement soon.
Late Sunday, outgoing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid announced his support for Congressman Ellison to be the Chair of the DNC. Sources tell WCCO that Ellison could make an announcement as soon as Monday.
