Minnesotans Prep For First Blast Of Snow

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minnesotans are preparing for the first blast of winter weather this year.

With snow advisories blanketing the state, people are out buying what they need to handle whatever Mother Nature deals out.

Stores are beginning to see a steady flow of people buying up salt and shovels.

Road crews are gearing up as well to make sure Friday evening's commute is trouble-free.

"We are ready to rock," said Keri Erickson, assistant manager at Frattalone's Ace Hardware in Minneapolis. "We have everything you are going to need and we are not going to run out."

Frattalone's is showcasing everything they have in stock to handle a snow storm. From snow blowers to salt spreaders, and snow scrapers to hand warmers, people are looking for any help they can get to keep the snow and ice at bay.

Erickson says most folks are looking for a basic shovel and salt to keep their walkways clear. She says how long you have lived in Minnesota usually determines what you drop into the store to get.

"Us true Minnesotans are just coming in being prepared. The new people, the new residents are like, 'What do I need? What do I need?' And we're like, 'We got it all for you,'" Erickson said.

While homeowners are preparing for the good fight against the elements, the Minnesota Department of Transportation says it is ready.

"We've been preparing for the snow and ice season since last May," said MnDOT's Kevin Gutknecht.

He says the salt-and-sand mixture is ready, and so are the truck operators who will spread it on the roads.

"The trucks are ready. It doesn't take long to get a plow attached to a truck," Gutknecht said. "The operators are ready, they are trained. All of our operators have had an experience behind the wheel."

MnDOT's concern is if the traveling public is ready. They ask for people to plan ahead, slow down, pay attention and -- most importantly -- make sure your vehicle is serviced and ready to handle the weather.

Gutknecht says crews are on standby, waiting for the snow to arrive. Once it is here, crews will work 12-hour shifts to clear the roads.

Frattalone's Ace Hardware says it will open at 7:30 a.m. to accommodate all those who forgot to get that shovel and salt.
