Car2Go Pulling Out Of Twin Cities, Citing High Taxes

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A major car-sharing service will no longer be available to residents of the Twin Cities.

Car2Go announced Friday that it will be pulling its tiny, blue and white smart cars from the Twin Cities area by the end of the year.

In an email to customers, the company -- whose car-sharing service has been in the metro area since 2013 -- says "extremely high state rental car taxation rates" have made the Twin Cities "one of the most expensive places in North America to operate our services."

Car2Go offers customers access to its fleet of recognizable, blue and white smart cars throughout the Twin Cities for a one-time membership fee, and an hourly or daily rate per use. Gas is included in the rate, and cars come with a fuel card.

The company says customers -- whose membership lasts for life -- can still use the service in other available metro areas.
