High School Sports Rally Coach Of The Year: Charles Adams

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Each week, WCCO honors a "Coach of the Week," in conjunction with the Minnesota Vikings and the National Football League.

This week, we honor our Coach of the Year. His name is Charles Adams, who leads an unbeaten Minneapolis North football team with his father, Charlie Adams.

It is practice time at North High School, and Charles is trying to continue to instill what he wants.

"I want people in the community to know that we can have a legitimate program for football and be competitive, and have some of the same things, you know, that a lot of the suburban schools have," Adams said.

Winning football games has become the norm, and Adams is hoping to change some lives in the process.

"We have what it takes to get it, and the hope and integrity and the will to do better is, every kid has that," he said.

It goes deeper than that. Charles is also a police officer, and his father -- who is his defensive coordinator -- is also on the force.

"I think it helps our program quite a bit because we have kids who really don't like police," Charlie said. "After spending some time with us, they totally respect it. I have three of my players right now who want to be police officers."

It has become an important bridge to a gap in this day and age; police officers working with kids with trust.

"You know, they have to [worry about] how will things affect them with the new elected president, or even how to conduct themselves when dealing with the police," Charles said.

That is why this relationship is so important, and why getting to kids to play becomes important. It creates dialog.

"You know … gaining the trust of your players, your parents, the community. Not only for the job that you do, but just, you know, the effort that you give to coach these young men," Charles said.

And that is why Charles is our Coach of the Year; not just because his teams win, but because he is an influence.

"I'm really thrilled watching him coach," Charlie said. "He knows how to motivate the kids, he's very good with them. They respect him."
