Freezing Rain & Sleet Accompanies Morning Commute

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Just in time for the Tuesday morning commute, there have been various reports of rain, sleet and wet snow around the south and southwest metro. And more is expected for the late afternoon commute.

With temperatures slightly above freezing around the metro, freezing rain has been falling in the south and southwest metro. To the north, snow has been falling to the north in St. Cloud and further north to Bemidji.

A winter weather advisory goes into effect at 2 p.m. and is in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Winds are expected to breezy, 10 to 20 mph.

A bulk of the moisture, however, arrives just in time for the afternoon commute.

"It'll be a mix of rain and snow initially, but then turning over to all snow," meteorologist Matt Brickman said.

We'll see primarily wet snow overnight and into Wednesday morning. All totaled, 1 to 3 inches of snow will fall in the Twin Cities metro with isolated pockets of 4 to 6 inches.

The snow should end by noon Wednesday.

Cloudy conditions with mid-30s temperatures will continue through the remainder of the week making significant melting unlikely.

So, for Thanksgiving Day travel, it may be slick.

"With temperatures not warming up more than a couple degrees above freezing, that snow and ice is not going to melt through Wednesday, through Thursday, and probably not Friday either," Brickman said. "It's going to be slick on the side roads and county roads that don't get those initial plow crews to go through."

As of noon, roads in the metro were clear but MnDOT said they are monitoring the roads and are prepared to salt if they need to.
