DNR: No More Deer Found With Chronic Wasting Disease In SE Minn.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Department of Natural Resources says no more deer have tested positive for chronic wasting disease in southeastern Minnesota apart from the two infected bucks that were found earlier near Lanesboro.

Nearly 2,900 deer shot by hunters were tested as part of the surveillance effort.

DNR wildlife research manager Lou Cornicelli said Thursday they're optimistic the infection is localized and is not widespread.

The DNR is now developing its response, which will include a public meeting announcing the details. It's expected to include additional hunting opportunities to try to reduce the zone's deer population as much as possible to try to prevent any spread.

Chronic wasting disease is fatal to deer. While it's not known to affect human health, officials advise against eating animals known to have the disease.
