Winona Man Charged With Manslaughter After Shooting Friend In The Face

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Winona man is facing manslaughter charges after allegedly shooting his friend in the face last November.

Lucas Ryan Schultz, 20, has been charged with one count of manslaughter in the second-degree.

According to the criminal complaint, on Nov. 11 Schultz and some friends were at his home drinking and hanging out.

Sometime during the evening, Schultz went into his bedroom and brought out a silver-and-grey .22 caliber handgun. The handgun was passed around and Schultz eventually put it back into his room.

Witnesses told police that later in the evening, Schultz and his friend, an adult male, were in the kitchen talking.

Schultz once again got the handgun from his bedroom and brought into the kitchen. A witness said he jokingly pointed the gun at the victim's face.

He pulled the trigger, and a single round was fired into the victim's face.

According to the criminal complaint, just before 10:30 p.m. officers were called. Upon their arrival, officers spoke with Schultz outside of the home. He was cooperative, admitting to the shooting and telling them where the gun was. He told police he was sorry.

Schultz's BAC was two times the legal limit.

The victim was taken to the hospital where he later died from the gunshot wounds.

If found guilty, Schultz faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, a $20,000 fine or both.
