4-Year-Old Somali Girl Reunited With Family After Trump Executive Order

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A mother's plea to bring her daughter home was answered Thursday.

Samira Dahir was reunited with her daughter Mushkaad after nearly four years apart. Before Mushkaad was conceived, Dahir and her other two daughters applied for refugee status. Once they were approved, she faced an agonizing decision.

"In that time she had been pregnant, and had to make a choice to go to the United States and leave Mushkaad with family friends in Uganda," Sen. Al Franken said.

Mushkaad was finally cleared to come to the U.S. and on her way to Minnesota when she was declared inadmissible under President Trump's executive order barring refugees from entering the U.S.

Senators Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar appealed this case to U.S. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly. Just days later, Mushkaad and her two sisters in matching pink jackets were in their mother's arms

"I saw a picture today and it made me so happy," Sen. Franken said. "It's a beautiful picture. This is one of the things that makes this job such a great job."

We spoke with someone who worked with the family to make this reunion possible. They said Mushkaad is exhausted from her long trip and that the family is overjoyed after a rollercoaster of events.

The family will speak tomorrow in a press conference. Sen. Franken also said that if there are other families in this situation, they should contact his office so they can get to work on their reunions, too.
