MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Hennepin County’s longest-serving sheriff has died.

Don Omodt passed away Friday. He served as Hennepin County sheriff for seven terms, from 1967 to 1994.

Before he was sheriff, he served in the airborne division of the U.S. Army. He was also a special agent with the FBI and an assistant Hennepin County attorney.

The sheriff’s office says many of its current employees joined under Omodt’s leadership.

He was 89 years old.
