Community bookstores transfer an individual’s love of books into a magical place to be shared with the public. Most often, these local gems cater to specific titles and feature regional authors. Book clubs supported by these bookstores foster community and literacy among the locals and help encourage budding authors as well. So, after you get tired of the same wooden shelves and carbon-copied displays found at your local Barnes & Noble, travel to one of these local bookstores for a literary adventure.

Located in the quaint Linden Hills neighborhood, this children’s bookstore is named for a famous line in “Where the Wild Things Are.” Children are welcome to come through the child-sized door and enter the store that contains a tree fort, tiny benches and animals wandering the shop. Author events are common inside this bookshop and story hours are conducted weekly. Local elementary schools often travel on field trips to this small shop to enjoy a tale of fantasy or humor as well. Adults can also curl up with a kitty and a book from the ‘grown-up’ selection.

Northeast Minneapolis Hosting 18th Annual Art-A-Whirl

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Once again, it’s time to head over to Northeast Minneapolis to check out local arts, enjoy a wealth of foods and the flavor of one of the Twin Cities’ most unique neighborhoods.

The Art-A-Whirl is one of the largest open studio tours in the country, and it takes place at more than 70 locations in Northeast Minneapolis.

“I think a lot of people are surprised when they step into a studio building and see these hundreds of artists that work here all year around,” said Alejandra Pelinka, the executive director at the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association.

More than 500 local artists participate in the event.

“Artists really try to show as much artwork as they can within their studio, so they cram it packed with artwork,” Pelinka said.

This year marks the 18th for the annual event, which runs from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Art-A-Whirl participants will get the unique opportunity to experience and purchase locally-produced works of art, as well as talk one-on-one with the artists behind them.

Participants can also enjoy the old Minneapolis buildings that have been converted into studio spaces. One studio, for instance, is in the old Grain Belt Bottling House. Another, which used to hold General Mills, now holds Foci Glass, home to some of the most talented glass artists in Minnesota. The event is organized by the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association. The organization, according to Pelinka, is trying to give the city’s northeast side the reputation as a hub for arts.

A newcomer to the Minnesota Craft Brew scene but they have quickly become a favorite of beer drinkers. Founded in 2011 by three friends and former college roommates, Indeed Brewing Company has a penchant for adventure, both in the beers they brew and the way they go about brewing them. Using an approach like that of a fine restaurant, they use only the finest ingredients and are creative enough to combine their brews with things like coffee (check out the Burr Grinder Coffee Ale) and Smoked Peppers (Hot Box Imperial Smoked Porter). Besides the beer, Indeed has a fantastic Tap Room. Expect to find great food from local food trucks like Hola Arepa and Anchor Fish & Chips along with great beers from Indeed!

Another really new beer, the Dangerous Man Tap Room opened this last January and should already be a destination for beer lovers. With specialty brews such as a Scotch Ale with it’s deep toffee flavors, Hefeweizen, the German summer beer and their own take on coffee combinations with Matchbox Porter (a partnership with Matchbox Coffee Shop). While Dangerous Man doesn’t do food, their location near Anchor Fish & Chips is good incentive to pick up some grub and they encourage you to BYOF (yes, bring your own food)!

In a city full of new beers, this one is the newest on the list, debuting in late January at the Winter Carnival Beer Dabbler and opening their Tap Room in February. 612 Brew is yet another Northeast Minneapolis Brewery with a very hot tap room. You’ll find it difficult to belly up to their bar on a busy Friday or Saturday evening. The reason is the beer and a great atmosphere, set among the kettles and brewery in an old Nordeast Warehouse. Hopheads will love their Rated R, a terrific Rye IPA. And their seasonal brews put a spin on classic beers also. They’ve had great success with Mary Ann, a German Kolsch brewed with tons of fresh ginger for a spicy yet refreshing take on beer, and their newest beer, Main Stage. It’s an Amber Ale with low hops and lower alcohol so you can enjoy several on a nice hot summer day!

The granddaddy of Minnesota’s Craft Beers, Summit has now been brewing beers since 1986 (!!!) and are often mistakenly referred to as a microbrewery, when actually they’re now one of the top 50 breweries in the US as far as output. The Extra Pale Ale and Great Northern Porter have long been local favorites and beer lovers all over the US have been fans of this St. Paul Brewery for years. In September 2012, Summit opened their long-awaited Tap Room in their brewery overlooking the Mississippi in St. Paul. Summit is another brewery that brings in food trucks so you can enjoy a bite along with your pint. The Summit Tap Room is called the “Ratskeller”, German for “council room”. Works for us.

Bite Of Minnesota: Simple Vinaigrette

Last week I shared a delicious tri-colored salad on this blog that appears to be just in time for some 90-degree temperatures today. It wasn’t anything fancy, just arugula, radicchio, and endive with an equally un-fancy dressing of red wine vinegar, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Perfect for the cook who likes to be low maintenance in the summer months and let the flavor of local produce shine through.

However, if you’re looking for a salad dressing with more complexity, I have you covered on that end too. This is one of my favorite vinaigrettes and my go-to for dressing salads and lightly steamed vegetables.

Simple Vinaigrette
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
1 small garlic clove, minced
1 tsp shallot, minced
½ tsp sugar or honey
½ tsp salt
½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
¼ cup red wine vinegar
1 tbsp white wine vinegar
¼ cup olive oil
¼ cup flax seed oil

In a Mason jar, combine all ingredients and shake vigorously until combined. Alternatively you can use a food processor and slowly add olive and flax oil until incorporated.

Tucked away in St. Paul’s Merriam Park is a busy little flower shop capable of producing some very big work.

Martha Gabler Lunde — the Martha in Martha’s Gardens — is one of those people who ooze creativity.

Whether her focus is on flowers, or painting, or music, she’s always thinking. But even with her active imagination, Martha never envisioned opening her own shop.

“I do love the industry and what I do,” she said. “But owning a business, and being a mother wasn’t exactly in the plans.”

Those plans changed 15 years ago when Martha’s husband suddenly got very ill, and she was faced with the possibility of supporting her family all on her own.

“I don’t know that I would have had quite all of the ambition and drive had I not been going through such a health crisis within my family,” she said.

But her husband bounced back and her business blossomed.

Now her creativity is in full bloom. Martha isn’t shy about using non-traditional ingredients in her designs.

The hope is that customers are able to find the same joy in the arrangements that Martha and her crew find in making them.

“I think really it’s just about giving to people … distributing happiness,” she said.

The competition was tight this week, too, Angela’s Bella Flora in Duluth was a close runner-up.

Caramel Rolls with Butterscotch Pudding

Ingredients:

1 bag frozen rolls
1 package non-instant butterscotch pudding
2 tbsp cinnamon
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 to 1 cup chopped pecans

Directions:

Spray bunt pan with non-stick spray and put the frozen rolls in the pan.
Sprinkle small amounts of pudding, cinnamon, brown sugar and nuts.
Use melted butter to pour over the rolls. Allow the ingredients to settle overnight.
Bake at 350 degrees F for about 20 minutes in the morning. Let it cool down for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. (Don’t let cool too much. It will stick.)
Flip and serve it.

Overnight Egg Casserole

Ingredients:

6 eggs
2 cups of milk
1 tsp salt
1 tsp dry mustard
1 lb breakfast sausage
1 cup grated cheese
2 slices bread, cubed

Directions:

Cook sausage.
Beat first 4 ingredients together.
Grease a 9×13-inch pan.
Layer cubes, sliced sausage and cheese.
Pour egg mixture all over the top and refrigerate overnight.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes.

Orange Ricotta Waffles, Soft Scrambled Eggs and Orange Marmalade

Ingredients for waffles:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tbsp baking powder
1 tbsp baking soda
1 cup ricotta cheese
Zest of 1 orange
1/2 cup orange juice
1 cup milk
1 stick melted butter
3 eggs

Directions:

Mix dry ingredients together in a bowl. Set aside.
Mix well the ricotta cheese, zest of orange, orange juice, milk and eggs. Add to dry ingredients.
Add melted butter.
Set aside until ready to make waffles.

Ingredients for soft scrambled eggs:

6 eggs
3 oz butter
3 oz heavy cream
Salt and pepper

Directions:

Beat all ingredients together.
Cook over medium heat, mixing the eggs with a spatula.
Take off of the heat after the eggs are cooked but still soft.

Ingredients for orange marmalade:

Orange marmalade
1 cup heated orange marmalade (consumer choice)
1/4 cup orange juice
1/2 fresh vanilla bean

Directions:

Slowly warm the marmalade until it thickens.
Cook waffles.
Place eggs on top of waffles.
Add a dollop of marmalade mixture.

Wisconsin-Aged Cheddar, Smoked Ham and Chive Waffles

Ingredients:

1 cup diced Sargento Wisconsin extra sharp cheddar
1 cup diced smoke ham
1 1/2 tbsp baking powder
3 large eggs
1 cup Sargento Ricotta Cheese
1 cup milk or 1/2 and 1/2
8 tbsp melted butter
Zest of 1 orange

Directions:

Mix all wet ingredients together well and then add to the dry ingredients.
Mix thoroughly.
Fold in the Sargento aged cheddar, ham and the chives.
Bake in a non-stick waffle iron for desired golden brown color.
Serve with orange marmalade that you have warmed up or the classic maple syrup.

Banana Omelette Brulee

Ingredients for brulee:

8 bananas, sliced
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 stick butter
Juice of 1/2 of a lemon
1 fresh vanilla bean

Directions:

Melt butter with brown sugar and vanilla bean.
Cook for about 2 minutes on medium heat.
Add sliced bananas and then the lemon juice.
Set aside.

Ingredients for 1 omelette:

2 eggs
1/2 oz butter
1 oz heavy cream
Salt and pepper
1/4 cup powdered sugar

Directions:

Mix eggs and cream.
Melt butter in a non-stick pan.
Pour egg mixture in the pan.
Cook on medium heat.
Add banana filling.
Fold omelette.
Arbitrarily sprinkle powdered sugar on top.
Place under broiler for about 2 to 3 minutes until broiled.
Serve.

The pedestrian-friendly, shop-lined promenade in the center of downtown Minneapolis — actually a blocked-off portion of Nicollet Avenue — provided the perfect spot for The Mary Tyler Moore Show’s most iconic image. At the mall’s intersection with 7^th Street, Mary Tyler Moore tossed her knit beret into the air in a defiant sign of her independence, and director Reza Badiyi captured the moment for what would become one of the most indelible TV credit sequences of all time. Nowadays, the intersection is home to a Macy’s department store and a TV Land-sponsored statue of Moore, where tourists often file by to snap photos of themselves with “Mary.” The bargain shopping is good, too: Within a few blocks, visitors can hit up a Saks Fifth Avenue Off Fifth Outlet and the dazzlingly large Target store next to the chain’s corporate headquarters at 10^th Street.

Just a block off Nicollet Mall, IDS Crystal Court served as one of the main locations for the fourth season reshoot of the opening sequence. Among the ultra-modern, mirrored walls and windowed ceiling, we see Mary riding the escalator while running errands and on later spy her a date with a man (in fact, her real-life husband and president of her production company, Grant Tinker). The indoor mall still looks the same today and boasts both convenient chains — Cosi, Potbelly, Banana Republic, The Gap — and the luxurious Marquette Hotel. Book a table at the Marquette’s restaurant, Basil’s, overlooking the mall, to re-enact Moore and Tinker’s “date.”

This 20-story skyscraper on Nicollet Mall — known in the Mary Tyler Moore era as Midwest Plaza — served as the exterior shot of WJM-TV, where Mary worked in the newsroom. Visit the 8^th Street Grill on the street level for some good bar food and an atmosphere akin to the bar Mary’s boss, Lou Grant, often escaped to.

On camera, Mary says she lives at 119 N. Weatherly, which doesn’t exist in real life. The house used as the exterior shot of Mary’s first apartment building, however, is quite real: It’s a gorgeous, 9,500-square-foot, single-family home at 2104 Kenwood Parkway. This is not an official tourist destination — it’s a home with actual residents (and it recently went up for sale. But that hasn’t stopped pilgrims from flocking to the home, tucked deep back in the tiny Kenwood neighborhood.

When Mary moves out of her cozy studio apartment in later seasons, she relocates to a sleek one-bedroom in this modernist apartment complex. Designed by prolific Minneapolis architect Ralph Rapson, the development contains the 39-story McKnight building, one of the city’s tallest structures outside of the downtown area. The complex has been known at various times as both a haven for drugs and, more recently, as a great place for recent immigrant families to get on their feet. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a significant example of urban redevelopment. The distinctive concrete buildings still rent out to tenants today, and are surrounded by the hip Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Thanks to the area’s proximity to the University of Minnesota’s Minneapolis campus, it maintains a wide selection of affordable cafes, bars, and performance venues.

The Kowalski’s on Hennepin Avenue is where Mary grocery shops — and is seen scowling at the 1970s’ high meat prices in the fourth season credits. The location makes geographic sense as a likely spot for Mary, a resident of nearby Kenwood, to shop. The neighborhood overall also made sense for Mary, a young and single urbanite, as the Uptown area developed into an artsy enclave. What started out as an idea by the brothers behind Saffron in Minneapolis turned into a food truck and has now turned into its very own brick and mortar shop serving up foods influenced from spices all around the world. The dishes at this little joint pack a heaping helping of flavors, especially the tacos. It’s officially garage sale season! I saw my first sale of the season over the weekend and got quite giddy with excitement. Tables and chairs waiting to be refinished flooded the yard while rows of knickknacks led into the garage, all treasures waiting to be found by the right person.

Some of my favorite things have been found at garage sales. Unique kitchen tools like my old-time manual food processor used for quickly grating cheese or potatoes, wooden wine boxes are great for both storing wine and decorating, and thanks to garage sales I have a decent collection of cigar boxes for storing little things around the house.

My most used purchase has to be the Very Vegetarian cookbook that I picked up for $1. At the time I had no clue that “very vegetarian” actually meant “vegan” as I was simply attracted to the wide array of vegetable focused recipes. Over the years I’ve cooked my way through the book and recently made a recipe that quickly became a favorite: Red Onion Pickles.

Not only are these pickles easy to make, they are a great accompaniment to many dishes and I’ve found myself eating them raw, adding them to tacos, and making quick snacks of baguette slices, cream cheese, and red onion pickles.

Red Onion Pickles
(from Very Vegetarian by Jannequin Bennett)

3 large red onions, peeled and cut into slices
½ cup + 2 tbsp red wine vinegar
¼ cup water
¼ cup sugar
¼ tsp salt
1 whole clove
3 black peppercorns

In a small saucepan, combine vinegar, water, sugar, salt, clove, and peppercorns. Bring the mixture to a boil.

Divide sliced onions between 2-3 Mason jars and pour hot liquid over onions. Stir gently and let cool slightly on the counter before sealing jars and storing in the refrigerator. Let onions sit at least one hour before using. Onions should keep for a couple of weeks.

Bring along matches

Keep them in a Ziploc to keep them safe from water exposure. Ranzau’s tip is to put a few cotton balls in the baggie to wick away any moisture that gets in, and if you find yourself in a pinch in the woods, you can use it for starting your fire. The cotton balls can also be used for first aid. Matches come in handy for making fires to dry off clothes, to heat up food and to stay warm through the night.

Be sure to pack a knife

A drop point knife is best. It’s low in profile and doesn’t take up a lot of room in your pack. A good knife can be used for many things: cutting branches for making a fire, opening canned food, fileting fresh-caught fish, etc.

Bring insect repellant

Especially in Minnesota, it’s a good idea to carry (and use) plenty of insect repellant. Certain times throughout the year, black flies, horseflies and our ‘state bird,’ the mosquito, can ruin a camping trip in no time. It’s a good idea to call ahead to see how the bugs are if you’re planning on camping at a resort or park.

This is something you might not think of, especially if you’re going out camping by yourself, but a rainproof journal can serve many purposes: log what you do and where you go, record daily weather information, record if the fish are biting and what types of bait you’re using, note if the bugs are bad, etc. It’s good to look back at the journal to reference these things when you’re planning your next excursion.

Make sure to have a weatherproof tent

A soggy tent is no fun for anyone. Ranzau says that a weatherproof tent is a must, especially while camping in MN since the weather can turn in an instant. It’s good to be prepared. A tip for campers is to set up your tent when you arrive to your site, while there is still daylight. Setting up a tent can be difficult, and as stated before, a MN day in the summer can be nice and sunny, but the thunder clouds can roll in quickly.

Pack high-energy foods

High-energy foods like jerky, nuts, dehydrated fruits, bagels and honey are all easily stored and don’t take up too much precious room in your bags. It’s wise to eat high-protein/nutrient foods especially for hiking, portaging and other intense outdoor activities.

Bring a two-piece fishing rod

If you’re planning on fishing, bring a two-piece rod along. It stores easily since it comes apart, and if you’re hiking to a fishing spot, you don’t have to worry about your rod snagging and snapping off on your way to catch your dinner.

Another tip, suggested by Ranzau, is if your’re planning on camping by yourself, leave a note behind or tell someone the details of your trip. That way, all of your bases are covered in case anything happens.

In 1971, Martha Burns began her swim school in Minnetonka. Viewers’ Choice For MN’s Best Pizza

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Pizza is something practically everyone loves, but not everyone agrees on.

Thin crust or deep dish, anchovies or extra cheese – and who makes the best pie in town?

It’s too difficult a question for us to answer, so we put it to a vote of WCCO viewers.

More than 8,000 people weighed in, and picked a place that got its start at Cleveland and Grand avenues in St. Paul – Davanni’s.

Davanni’s hasn’t always been the Twin Cities staple it is today. When the doors opened in 1975, it was Pontillio’s.

“It was a real small location, we only had 30 seats in this place,” Mick Stenson said.

When Stenson came on board two years later, he wasn’t exactly a restaurant veteran.

“I was working in the plumbing business, and it was a side light to me, and then we started doing really well,” Stenson said.

They changed the name to Davanni’s in 1983 and grew not by trying to be trendy or gourmet, but by being consistent.

“There’s nothing terribly romantic about the Blodgett ovens that are behind me,” Stenson said. “They aren’t the wood fired ovens, but they make really great pizzas.”

And as much as the food, people seem to like the shops.

“There’s something about this location, it just seems to have a very mellow, fun vibe,” customer Ron Gustafson said.

That comes from giving managers room to make each Davanni’s their own.

“I don’t really think of this as a chain,” Gustafson said. “I think of it as Davanni’s on Grand and Cleveland.”

As for the pizza itself, it’s simple and straightforward.

There were also some smaller shops that got a bunch of votes, too.

Old World Pizza in Inver Grove Heights, Sven & Ole’s in Grand Marais, and Jake’s Pizza in Willmar.
