Fright Farm, operated by the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department, uses psychological horror to produce its thrills. The haunted house here requires visitors to find their own way out—no one will guide you, and you can be sure it’s not a straightforward route. There are emergency exits available. Not recommended for ages 12 and under. However, there is a matinee day for kids (see above).

If you come later in the day than the low-scare matinee mentioned earlier, prepare yourself. The horror here isn’t just scary—it’s 3D. The glasses are included and two houses and twenty rooms of terror lead to a haunted hayride. There’s also a corn maze and pumpkin farm on the property. Not recommended for kids under 8.

This is definitely an adult event. Shakopee’s Trail of Terror has 25 terrifying rooms to explore, if you dare. It’s not a matter of recommendation—the Soap Factory will not admit you if you are under 18. This fairly new addition to the haunted house scene in the Twin Cities is wildly popular (be sure to order tickets ahead of time to avoid disappointment). Artist-designed and playing with your head in ways you’d never imagined, this is the most truly terrifying place to visit at Halloween.

In the northern lakes area of the state are some of the region’s grand dames of resorts, many built in the early part of the 20th century that have survived and evolved to remain relevant and popular in the 21st. These are family friendly resorts, but also resorts that cater to couples in search of romance—or at least some topnotch golf. Many of these resorts have a history not unlike that of the resort in the movie “Dirty Dancing,” where generations of families return year after year in a beloved tradition. But no worries—there’s always room for new traditions to start. Check the individual websites as prices, room types and availabilities vary.

Madden’s opened north of Brainerd in 1909 under another name, but with the arrival of the Depression, the resort came into the hands of the Madden family, who maintain ownership of it to this day. A seasonal resort open late April through mid-October, Madden’s serves a variety of purposes: its location on Gull Lake gives it every water sports amenity, and an extensive kids’ program during the summer welcomes families and gives parents a break. Golfers will revel in the 63 holes of golf available, and those needing some pampering can visit the on-site Spalon Montage. There’s even a formal croquet area. Accommodations range in amenities in price, from very simple to deluxe, but very few have cooking facilities—guests are meant to relax and unwind, not cook and clean.

Originally constructed in 1918 as a lodge to house potential buyers of lakefront lots, Grand View today is on the National Registry of Historic Places due to its well-preserved log structure. The beautiful lodge sits on a hill overlooking Gull Lake, with a variety of accommodations surrounding it. Guests can choose from staying in the lodge itself, or reserve a golf villa or cabin or lake home. Three championship golf courses will keep golfers happy, and a full selection of water sports is offered, along with the Glacial Waters Spa. A kids’ program is offered in the summer. Open year-round, Grand View offers a full range of winter activities too, including skiing and snowshoeing, ice fishing, and dogsled and sleigh rides.

Not far from the Gull Lake area is Lost Lake Lodge. While not on the larger scale of Madden’s or Grand View Lodge, Lost Lake Lodge has its own charm. Tucked into a wooded area on Lost Lake, the Lodge offers rooms and cabins, a full range of water activities, a kids’ program in the summer, hiking trails on the property, and perhaps most enticingly, a highly regarded chef turning out wonderful meals. Lost Lake is open from early May through Labor Day.

Head north from Brainerd, and you’ll find this classic resort just outside of Bemidji. Ruttger’s dates back to 1898 — when there was pretty much nothing to do there but fish. Today the resort offers two lodges with rooms, villas, or rustic cabins. Summer brings plenty of water sports and a kids’ program. Ruttger’s is open year-round, although some of the more rustic accommodations are warm-weather only.

No overview of Minnesota’s great resorts would be complete without Ely’s Burntside Lodge, near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Open since 1913, Burntside is on the National Register of Historic Places and has been family owned since 1941. The gorgeous lodge and log cabins are nestled into a thickly wooded area along Burntside Lake. Relaxation and family time are the highest priorities here, and the cabins do not have TV or phones. Burntside also has a gourmet restaurant on-site.

The Beer
Schell’s is the second largest family owned brewery in the United States, second only to Yuengling, and they have been brewing bock for generations – since 1860 to be exact. So what is Bock beer exactly? This full-bodied lager is brewed in the fall and stored all winter long in anticipation of being tapped in the spring, and so they celebrate! The festival is so well attended that last year they expanded to add a fourth bar to help with lines. Speaking of lines, arrive early because only the first 5,500 people are admitted!

Keep Warm!
This is a totally out door event, but opportunity for warmth isn’t hard to come by. Part of the tradition is the Bock Fest Beer Poke. Migrate yourself (and your beer) toward one of the glowing bon fires where you’ll be treated to the tradition of a hot iron poker. It’s not what you’d think! This poker is swirled in your beer to caramelize and warm the beverage and bring out new flavors – experiencing this bubbling beverage is a must.

After getting “poked,” join the fun down by the stage to get your polka dance on, or feel the energy when the Ring of Fire is played. The live music is great and people watching can’t be beat. In all the fun, don’t forget to try the food! The lines could be long, so bring a friend and a little patience. Remember to buy tickets ahead of time. There are lines for the food and beer tickets as well, but they all move pretty quickly.

The Clothes
It’s quite possible you’ll experience people in perplexing costumes including scary creatures in masks, forest fairies, pirates – you name it. While you’re out, take in Fasching at Turner Hall. Fasching is a centuries old German Mardi Gras tradition celebrated each year by the people and visitors of New Elm in unforgettable ways. Don’t miss the “Parade of Costumes” at 8 p.m. Will the locals make a comeback this year? (Not one local won in 2011.) Live music and food round out the night.

Bock Hunt
So by now you’re convinced that Bock Fest is a big deal! And the Bock Medallion Hunt in the adjoining Flandrau State Park is another highlight where people use clues as they search to find the king and queen bocks (goats) to win cash prizes. It’s not just about the prizes, it is urban legend that if all bocks are accounted for, winter’s end is near. Taking this ritual at face value, one might not fully understand the importance of this whole bock thing. But each year festivalgoers fill up all the hotels in the area to be part of the camaraderie of the Bock. Booking overnight accommodations early is a must if you’re planning on traveling a distance.

The Bus
Shuttle buses are available, but prepare to get up early. While the event starts at 11 a.m., the line starts long before that. It’s also good idea to check out local bars that provide transportation (sign up ahead of time). The event at Schell’s ends at 4:30 p.m., and for many the party continues at local bars. Be sure to make arrangements for a safe drive home as the police are out. Designated drivers are always a must anyway, and root beer is a great option too!

The Memorabilia
The carriage house on the grounds has been converted to a museum, which houses brewery memorabilia and a gift shop. Both are open during the festival. Serious bock festers look legit with their big mugs versus the plastic cups. Bring your own mug or hit the Gift Shop where plenty are in stock – it’s not a bad idea to prevent spilling and who knows, you just might be hooked and find yourself heading back again next year!

Right on the Mississippi River is the Covington Inn, a bed and breakfast in a former river towboat. After it was retired from service, it was completely gutted and refitted, making the interior a warm and lovely escape. All rooms have working fireplaces and private baths; for the full experience, reserve the Pilot House Suite, a two-story suite with a sitting area in the glass-sided former wheelhouse. In-room massages can be arranged.

Just north of the busy Stillwater area is the village of Marine on St. Croix, home of the Asa Parker House. More than 150 years old, the Greek Revival home offers four choices of rooms, all with private bath, two with fireplaces. The Sarah Louise Room has original hardwood flooring—and a Jacuzzi facing the fireplace.

The Old Jail Bed and Breakfast is actually part saloon and part jail—an interesting combination—but all fully renovated into cozy retreats. This B&B in Taylors Falls is well suited for longer stays, as each unit has some form of kitchen, either full or with microwave/fridge. It’s hard to choose which is the best to reserve: the Cave Suite, in the former saloon with a stone archway leading to a private bath in the cave, or the Jail Cottage with a wood-burning fireplace.

Built in 1886 for a local judge, the Alexander Mansion is a gloriously sumptuous old-style Victorian mansion, full of countless architectural details. Many of the rooms have original pieces, including soaking tubs and fireplaces. All rooms have turn down service and luxury robes. The D.C. Alexander Suite also has a private four-season sunroom, and the option of having breakfast delivered to the room.

Located just west of Lanesboro, the Berwood Hill Inn rests high on a hillside, with views reaching miles into the valleys below. It’s close enough to Lanesboro to make visiting that charming town easy, but it also has the peacefulness of a more remote location. It doesn’t hurt that all the rooms are lavishly, yet warmly, decorated for maximum comfort and pampering.

Built in the late 19th century, the Deutsche Strasse is in a gracious residential area not far from historic downtown New Ulm. All rooms have private bath, and all but one have a fireplace. It’s worth splurging for the Black Forest Suite, with a hot tub room that has a fireplace and robes.

This Dutch Colonial Revival home, designed by Edwin H. Hewitt, offers seven rooms, all with lake views, private baths, and fireplaces. The gem here is the Lake Superior Suite, with a large stone fireplace flanked by leather furniture, two-person whirlpool, and cherry cabinetry.

More than 125 years later that Carnival continues as a most beloved winter tradition. In 2012, festivities officially kick off on Jan. 26, but some earlier events will start on Jan. 3 and run through Feb. 5. Here are some highlights of what’s in store for you to enjoy. And if you enjoy the Carnival, consider purchasing one of the Winter Carnival buttons for $5, to help pay for winter’s biggest event.

Jan. 29-Feb. 6

Snow sculptures. These are intricate, often humorous and generally much larger than life. These will be on display at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds beginning Jan. 29. Bonus: driving through the Fairgrounds in winter is a fun, somewhat eerie experience.

Even more beautiful are the ice sculptures that will be on display at downtown St. Paul’s Rice Park, complete with an ice wall commemorating the sponsors (and the St. Paul Central Library as a backdrop). Sculptures will be on display throughout the Carnival; judging takes place for multi-block sculptures on 1/26, and individual carvings will be judged on 1/29. Visit the sculptures on Thursdays at noon during the Carnival to also enjoy live music. And don’t forget WinterSkate — free open skate (weather permitting) Thurs.-Sun., 1/26-2/5. Skate rental is $2.

But it doesn’t end there; follow the festivities to Rice Park and witness King Boreas being overthrown on the steps of the St. Paul Public Library, then take in the fabulous fireworks from Raspberry Island. Time to warm up? Then head over to the (indoor) Vulcan Victory Dance at the Crown Plaza Hotel.

There’s nothing like an icy, cold plunge into a freezing Minnesota lake to get the heart pumping. If this gets your heart to thumping just thinking about the exhilarating thrill of the plunge, then you should definitely give it a go and register for this great cause right away. In 2011, almost 11,000 people took the icy challenge in Minnesota that raised 2.2 million dollars for Special Olympics Minnesota.

In 2011, there were 14 Polar Bear Plunge events with events taking place from Jan. 28 to March 17. And in 2012 there will be 15 chances to dive into the icy cold waters throughout the Twin Cities area. You can register for the 2012 Polar Bear Plunges here.

If you’ve never entertained the idea of participating in the Polar Bear Plunge and shutter at the mere idea of jumping into a lake in the middle of the winter, there is another way for you to participate in this Special Olympics fundraiser. Each person taking the plunge is asked to raise money for the cause by getting sponsors to pledge to donate money.

If you’re like me, this is where you come in. You can still feel proud for helping raise money for this worthy cause and you don’t even have to get wet.

This invigorating fundraiser provides yearly sports training and competition opportunities to over 7,100 adults and children with intellectual disabilities. The more money raised by the Special Olympics, the more programs this organization can offer and the more individuals this group can assist.

There are plenty of party spots around the state for New Year’s Eve, especially in the Twin Cities, but if you’re looking for someplace romantic and away from the hustle and bustle, here are some alternatives well worth a look.

This beautiful and historic small town on the southwest border of Minnesota will give you wide open skies, starkly beautiful (and likely snowy) landscapes, and a downtown that has nearly 30 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, architecturally fascinating and constructed from beautiful red stone.

What to do on a New Year’s Eve visit? For starters, explore the breathtaking Pipestone National Monument. A revered spot for Native Americans, it’s also a strikingly beautiful natural area. The Monument is open year-round (closed on New Year’s Day, though, so be sure to go on the 31st!).

Up the romance factor by staying at the Historic Calumet Inn.

At its current site, the Calumet opened in 1888 (an earlier incarnation a block away burned down in 1886). Built from the Sioux Quartzite native to the area, the Calumet is one of the many historic buildings in the town’s center, and its rooms are charming and often decorated with period pieces.

Speaking of beautiful and historic lodgings, you can’t go wrong with booking a trip to Lanesboro in southeast Minnesota. Lanesboro’s tagline is “The Bed & Breakfast Capital of Minnesota”, and there’s no shortage of small, elegant boutique inns to visit. Lanesboro itself is another beautiful little town, full of historic buildings.

If you like to cross-country ski, you’re all set—the Root River Trail runs through Lanesboro, and all 42 miles of it are open for skiing in winter.

This historic mining north of Duluth gives you easy access to a larger city and its amenities, while still providing the peacefulness of a getaway. And what better way to get away from it all than to overnight in a lighthouse?

Not only would you have access to Duluth, you could also travel just an hour north to reach Lutsen, home to some of Minnesota’s finest skiing runs. Take a look at our Guide to Skiing and Snowboarding.

Want a getaway without really having to get very far away? Permanently moored at St. Paul’s Harriet Island is the Covington Inn Bed and Breakfast.

The Covington Inn was originally a tugboat that entered service in 1946 and worked for 30 years. After languishing for 20 years in dry-dock, she was completely refurbished and brought to her final home on the Mississippi, where it offers four cozy accommodations. From the boat, you can enjoy the view of St. Paul’s skyline right across the river—and even join in the more boisterous celebrations on that side.

Twenty-two downhill runs, a 700-foot vertical drop, the Midwest’s largest Terrain Park, 22 km of Nordic Ski Trails and night skiing all make Spirit Mountain a top spot for skiing in the state, many call it the best. It has something for everyone. Take lessons in skiing or snowboarding – trained instructors will show you the way to navigate the slopes as well as tackling the basics. Often ranked #1 in the state by serious skiers, Lusten Mountain provides a true rush. This bona fide mountain is just under a 900-foot vertical drop, has 90 runs and 1,000 acres of land to cover. Check out the difference in the four peaks that have something for skiers of all levels, take the plunge on the north face of Mouse Mountain, or be challenged on the expert runs. Snowboarding is allowed all over the mountain and lessons are available as well. And the fun doesn’t end there, after a day of skiing Lutsen offers horse drawn sleigh rides, snowshoeing and dog sledding.

Another winner in the world of skiing and snowboarding is Giants Ridge. With 35 downhill runs, a 500-foot vertical drop and some of the best snowboarding terrain parks around, this is a great spot especially groups and families. Want to take the skis off and still play outside? Go snowshoeing, snowmobiling, or head to the new snow tubing park. While it’s not the biggest, Giants sure is near the top when it comes to great spots to hit the slopes.

Are you ready for some real snowboarding? This is a spot where snowboarders flock to and being only 20 minutes from the Twin Cities, the easy access can’t be beat. Hyland has 35 skiable acres on a 175-foot vertical, lessons and rentals available. If you’re coming here to ski, we recommend choosing another spot off our list as they cater to snowboarders –- and face it, we need a place like this! Be sure to hit French Cliff.

Coffee Mill Ski Area offers a great atmosphere, a 425-foot vertical, and its “bowl” shape protects skiers from feeling the severe cold from the cold. It is not an ultimate ski experience like some others mentioned, but with its excellent grooming, and nice pricing; Coffee Mill is a quality spot where you can really enjoy everything from the mellow slopes of Chippewa to the radical pitch of O’Chute.

While the Clemens Gardens are best during the summer months, no trip to St. Cloud is complete without a visit to one of the most romantic places in town. Virginia Clemens was wheelchair bound with multiple sclerosis for many years of her life, and over time her husband Bill donated not only money, but land to the city of St. Cloud for the construction of Clemens Gardens. Located across the street from the Clemens’ home, Bill provided Virginia a beautiful view of flowers and plants created in the finest European tradition. Today the garden is a peaceful stroll any time of year. Start at the Renaissance Fountain with Cranes, which was donated to the gardens by the Clemens’. The ornate 24 feet tall fountain is the largest public park fountain in Minnesota.

A physical representation of the power of prayer, Assumption Chapel, or what is fondly nicknamed “Grasshopper Chapel,” was erected in honor of something very Minnesotan – bad spring weather. In April 1877 the area was threatened by a devastating grasshopper plague, which would ruin the crops for a second year in a row. The governor of Minnesota declared April 26 a day of prayer, and the result was a good old-fashioned late spring snowstorm. The grasshoppers perished and the crops were saved. While not the original structure (the first wooden chapel was destroyed by a tornado in 1894), the current day chapel is made from area granite. The Land of 10,000 Lakes celebrates its love of fishing at this unique museum in Little Falls, just 30 minutes from St. Cloud. More than 10,000 antique artifacts are on display in a museum that celebrates four million acres of waterways in the state. Not only can you see lures from days past, but a cabin recreation and lake diorama are also part of the museum, in addition to a Minnesota record fish display.

With two floors of exhibits, the Stearns History Museum explains why St. Cloud is The Granite Capital of Minnesota. A model of a 1930 working quarry speaks to the history of the working Granite City. There is a children’s room for ages 4-7 that teaches about commerce, and in the museum’s theater several shows review everything about St. Cloud, from the impact of the Mississippi River to the industrial history of the town.

REI offers open climb times, classes and group events at their Pinnacle climbing wall. Many of the classes are taught by Vertical Endeavors staff members. There are classes for women, families, beginners and more. This is a great spot for your bigger kids. Children at least 42 inches tall are allowed to climb this wall with a waiver signed by a parent. For children under 14, parents need to be present while the child is climbing.

Love Tree was by far the most “farm” experience of the three. Lovetree is a cheese-making farm with goats, sheep, cows, chickens and lots of sweet, working dogs. You can walk around the barns and see the farmer milking the animals, pet the animals and even bottle-feed the calves and kids, if you’re there at the right time.

The pizza is made in a makeshift grotto that is being constructed with walls of old tires. In the grotto are a few tables and chairs for those who wish to dine there. The cheeses made on the farm are used on the pizzas and you can get a cheese plate for tasting, which makes for a great start to your meal. The veggies and herbs are also from the farm; and the crust is made from long fermented organic cave-aged pizza dough, making it quite sturdy, nutty and eventually charred from the wood-fired oven.

Our pizza of choice was topped with turkey apple brats, caramelized onions, fresh basil and their briny, flavorful cave-aged cheese.

The space to eat is much smaller than the other two farms, but it seems to be a smaller operation and there was room for all there with seating in small glade overlooking a pond. There is a rustic bathroom with outdoor sink at this farm. This, too, is a beautiful drive from the Twin Cities. You can find their cheeses at the Kingfield Farmer’s Market in Minneapolis, the St. Paul Farmer’s Market, Corner Table, and. W.A. Frost.

Red Barn Farm is in its second season of making pizza. This pizza was actually my favorite. Our pizza of choice was the Northfielder with Italian sausage, onions, peppers and cheese. We went on a Sunday afternoon, the weather was mild, the other picnickers conversations were hushed, chickens quietly pecked at the ground and there was a lazy Sunday afternoon feel to it. At this farm, all the pizzas cost $20, no matter the topping. Again, the pizza is cooked in a wood-fired oven and made with the veggies from their farm and the meat from a producer down the road. The proprietress told me that Sundays are relaxed and quiet and Wednesdays are busier and more communal and often there is live music to compliment the backyard party feel. There is a porta-potty at this farm. If you have time after the pizza picnic, there are several shops with ice cream just a few miles away in Northfield. And a stroll around this picturesque little town is just the way to end a lovely day in the country.

If you are interested in free-range apples, hop in the car to take a short drive over to White Pine Orchard in River Falls, Wisconsin – the best spot for organic apple picking and non-pasteurized apple cider. Visitors are invited to bring a picnic basket and enjoy their freshly picked apples with lunch. Kids are welcome to pick one apple free of charge, and the owners are always eager to talk about their growing practices.

Tucked in West St. Paul and Mendota Heights, the Thomas Irvine Dodge Nature Center is one of the first nature centers of Minnesota. It is a peaceful 320-acre respite from the city, just minutes from I-35E, and five miles from downtown Saint Paul.

What makes Dodge Nature Center so unique is the vast array of environmental adventures one can experience on the property. The land ranges from prairie to wetlands, forest to a working farm. There are also several lakes, a raptor complex, miles of hiking trails, an orchard and a bee apiary.

Dodge Nature Center was founded by Olivia Irvine Dodge in 1967. The original vision for the center has resulted in an extensive curriculum of environmental education, with workshops and activities for people of all ages. Activities for parents and kids alike include family camp, old-fashioned farm chores and ways we can protect our ecosystem, to name a few of the almost daily offerings. Public programs range from learning how a bee keeper extracts honey from a honeycomb to outdoor star gazing. There are even senior programs that teach more about the natural environment, from plants to wildlife.

The Center is free to visit. However, most activities have a cost, ranging from an average of $3 for adults and $1.50 for children, up to $185 for week-long camps. Scholarships are available and there are discounts on many community programs and activities if you are a member of Dodge Nature Center. Annual membership is $60 for families, $50 for educator’s families, $40 for individuals, $30 for educator individuals, $30 for seniors and $10 for students. Beyond program and activity discounts, members receive discounted admission or free admission to sponsored events at the Center and some community discounts. Trails at Dodge Nature Center are available for walking or running, sunrise to sunset and free of charge. Trails are located on the main 110-acre property, the 40-acres Marie Woodland property, and the 170-acre Lily Savanna property. Dogs are also prohibited to keep everyone safe and the natural landscape preserved. Bikes are not allowed.

Cross-country skiing is available during the winter months on the Lily and Marie property trails. The trails are not groomed, but guests are invited to create their own.

One of the unique programs Dodge offers is the Family Garden Program, which teaches organic farming techniques. The Dodge farm provides 15 x 15 plots of land, the tools necessary and pest control techniques. There are approximately 30 plots available on a first come, first serve basis. Plots are available each year for members at $85 and $115 for non-members.

Another unique benefit for visitors is exposure to a variety of animals. Raptors and farm animals are available for viewing, as well as reptiles and amphibians in participating outreach programs. Upon entering the main campus off Marie Ave., guests are greeted by the Voight Raptor Mew. The raptors have been donated to Dodge Nature Center due to permanent injury or because they cannot thrive after being released back into the wild. It’s a great thrill to see a hawk, owl, falcon and bald eagle up close.

The main office is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors are invited to stop by the office if they are on property during open hours to check-in and get more information about all of the offerings Dodge Nature Center provides.

Along the lakeshore is the Lake Bemidji Art Walk, an outdoor sculpture that winds along a grassy trail. Don’t let cool or even cold weather deter you—bundle up and see how different the artwork appears in every season – even a snowy environment. If you start at the Tourist Information Center at the lake, you can pick up a treasure hunt map to aid your exploration.

A great rainy (or freezing!) day activity is a stop at the Headwaters Science Center. The overarching theme here is “Science You Can Touch”, and that’s exactly what you’ll find—nearly all the exhibits involve hands-on involvement, with varying levels of difficulty for different age groups. Ask the staff about handling the live animals—if you dare!

If you’re visiting in the summer, be sure to check out what’s playing at the Paul Bunyan Playhouse, the state’s longest continuously running summer stock theatre. Every summer the Playhouse presents several productions, usually including a musical, and there is often something family friendly on the bill.

If you’re interested in having yourself and your kids learn a new language, plan ahead and book a camp at Concordia Language Villages. Even if you don’t want to immerse yourself in a second language, take the time to visit the Villages, just outside of Bemidji. Each language has its own village nestled into the woods, and it’s like visiting another country without having to hop on a transatlantic flight.

North of Bemidji is the dual-purpose park, Buena Vista Ski Area and Ranch. Buena Vista is at the top of the Continental Divide and overlooks nine lakes. When there’s snow on the ground, stop by for some skiing; in the summer, the ski area becomes a “ranch”, and visitors can learn some horsemanship or take a covered wagon ride.

No trip to the Bemidji area would be complete with a visit to nearby Itasca State Park, the state’s oldest state park and home to the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Even the smallest child (with some helping hands) can cross the Mississippi by foot. Make a day of it; Itasca State Park is a jewel, with all manner of outdoor fun.

Taking a walk on the wild side is the entire purpose of Central Park Dale East. The main feature of this side of Central Park is Harriet Alexander Nature Center, which encompasses 52 acres of plants and wildlife, with a floating boardwalk that winds through marsh and prairie. Visitors can hike on the boardwalk or jog on the soft dirt trails. Even though it’s in the heart of Roseville, I always feel completely removed from the bustle of life standing in the center of the nature center and listening to the birds chip to each other.

Throughout the summer Harriet Alexander runs many day camps and activities for every age, and community campfire evenings and overnights in the summer and fall. In September the nature center pays homage to Minnesota’s heritage and favorite grain – wild rice. The Wild Rice Festival is set for September 17, 2011, with a fundraising pancake breakfast running from 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. From 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. you can enjoy free entertainment, exhibits, Native American music and dancing, plus a silent auction. Located next to Harriet Alexander Nature Center, the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota is a hospital and rehab facility for sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. The center is not open to the public for touring, but a 40 minute presentation is available to anyone interested in the center’s work, either at the center or at the facility of your choice. There is no charge for the presentation, but a donation is requested to cover the center’s time and costs. Located directly across the street from Harriet Alexander Nature Center, the Muriel Sahlin Arboretum is an eight-acre sanctuary, full of trees, themed flower beds, rock landscaping and benches overlooking a water fountain. During the summer months there are garden demonstrations and classes that celebrate the beauty of the outdoors. A perfect place for a romantic stroll with or a good book and your thoughts, the arboretum is tranquil, yet accessible, and smells divine.

Central Park at Lexington Avenue is the something-for-everyone park. There is an outdoor amphitheater with lawn and park bench seating for concerts, which are held throughout the summer, plus biking and walking trails around Bennett Lake, a playground, several bathroom shelters and outdoor grills. My favorite park amenity is the four natural soil bocce ball courts, located near the parking lot (equipment not included).

Pack up a picnic and plan to stay at Central Park Victoria West for awhile. The largest picnic area within the park, it contains two shelters that can be rented with a full kitchen and bathrooms. There is also a sandy-base swing set, playground with lots of crawling tunnels and slides, tennis courts, sand volleyball and paved trails around Bennett Lake. Perfect for a large family get-together or work event.

Franconia Sculpture Park

Celebrating its 15th year, the Franconia Sculpture Park is three miles west of Taylors Falls at the intersection of Hwy. 8 and Hwy. 95. Pulling into the parking lot you suddenly sense you’ve stumbled onto the land of Misfit Toys. Strewn about the lawn, the sculptures range from slightly unusual to imaginative oddities. There are mowed paths to each piece, and a gravel path winding throughout the property. From April to December visitors are welcome to talk with the artists in residence about their art. There are artist led tours each Sunday at 2:00 p.m. from May to October. A 3-D concert series is held through the summer and on limited weekends during the fall, including Aug. 27, Sept. 10 and Oct. 8. Family-friendly music is a great backdrop for a picnic in the park, and tours are given during band breaks. On Sat., Sept. 24 between 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m., the annual Art & Artist Celebration will mark the installation of new sculpture in the park. Spend the day with the artists and enjoy tours, live music, poetry, children’s activities and food.

Interstate State Park

One of the great natural state parks in Minnesota and Wisconsin, Interstate State Park has spectacular views, trails, rock climbing and glacial potholes. There are at least 10 different lava flows from earthquakes estimated to have erupted 1.1 billion years ago in Taylors Falls. The park is on both the Minnesota and Wisconsin sides, divided by the limestone rocks surrounding the St. Croix River. The Minnesota park was established in 1895 and the Wisconsin park in 1900, making this is the first “interstate” park in the nation.

The park hosts weekly events, 37 camp sites, 22 electrical sites, RV parking and four group camp sites for parties up to 25 people. There is also cabin rental nearby. Standard campsites range from $12-$20 per night. The park has five miles of hiking trails and three miles of self-guided trails with varying levels of difficulty. In addition to picnic areas, the park has a volleyball area and offers rock climbing with a permit. Rock climbing permits are obtained in the park office year-around at no charge. From Memorial Day to mid-October permits are also avail able in the Visitors Center.

A great way to see the scenic St. Croix River and the wildlife that make the river their home, canoe or kayak day rental includes two lifejackets and two paddles. You can paddle either a one-way 7 mile route from Interstate State Park in Taylors Falls to Osceola or a 17 mile route from the park to William O’Brien State Park. Free shuttle return is provided. Group rates and local rental rates are also available. Parking at Wildwood RV Park and Campground is free and free shuttle service to Interstate State Park runs regularly. Parking at Interstate State Park is $5 per day or $25 for a year-long state park permit.

Located seven miles north of Taylors Falls, White Mountain Water Park, Alpine Slides and Go-Karts is a park for the whole family. The water park boasts speed slides, hydrotubes, an open flume, a floating man-made river and a kiddie park for the littlest adventurers. If alpine slides are more your style, ride a chair lift to the top of the mountain for a 1,700 foot ride down to the base of the hill. Into horsepower? Adult go-karts rev up to 15-20 miles per hour for fast, fun action. Kiddie go-carts are available on a separate, smaller track at 5 miles per hour, with included automatic brakes.

Wildwood RV Park and Campground

There’s so much to see and do in Taylors Falls, you might want to make a weekend of it. Enter Wildwood RV Park and Campground. Located about 10 minutes from Wildwood Mountain, campsites are available for tent camping, and pull-through RV sites with water and electric. A two night stay is required on weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day, three night stay on holiday weekends (with reservation). Same day walk-in camping for a single night is permitted.

Amenities on the campground include mini-golf for $2.50 per round, self-guided nature trail, heated pool, game room, basketball, volleyball and horseshoes.

Pierre the Voyageur

Many travelers know him as the “giant with no pants.” Pierre the Voyageur has been overlooking Two Harbors for about 50 years along the North Shore. He is now adjusting to a new location outside the Earthwood Inn, about a mile south of town. His head now turns, giving him views of both Scenic 61 and the 61 Expressway. Eventually, his new owners hope to have him talking and greeting visitors.

Largest Albino Stag

As of July 2011, this leaping deer statue was white, but there was a movement among the locals to bring back some color. The whitewashing happened in 2010 after the natural colors had faded, it was time for a repainting, and organizers wanted to differentiate their deer from an identical statue in Deerwood, MN. The new white version has drawn children with wands, who think it resembles Harry Potter’s Patronus.

Honk the Moose

Based on a real life moose that became a children’s storybook character, this life-sized statue stands in Biwabik’s downtown park. In 2010, there was a bit of a scandal when Honk disappeared from his platform in Schuster Park. Unaware that city workers had removed the statue to have it refurbished, many townspeople believed it had been stolen. Some even started a Facebook page, “Bring Honk the Moose Home.”

World’s Largest Floating Loon

Anchored in Silver Lake, this 21-foot bird known as “Ginny” is believed to be the largest floating loon in the world. Ginny is one of the main attractions during Virginiaʼs annual Land of the Loon Festival in June, but she stays floating throughout the warmer months.

World’s Largest Iron Man

This mammoth tribute to iron miners is said to be the third largest free-standing memorial in the United States (behind the Statue of Liberty and St. Louis Arch). It is 81 feet high and weighs 150 tons. You can find it across from the Minnesota Discovery Center.

Huge Hockey Stick and Puck

Weighing five tons, this Christian Brothers stick is believed to be the worldʼs largest free standing hockey stick. Itʼs part of Evelethʼs Hockey Plaza, with a large puck and giant mural on a nearby building. This stick replaced an earlier one that
was three feet shorter. Eveleth is also home to the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.

Giant Rooster

Outside a gift shop where you can stock up on Beanie Babies, sweats and moccasins stands this 8-foot fiberglass rooster along Highway 61. Itʼs been there since 1963, although it has endured some near-death experiences. In 2003, someone smashed the statue by throwing it off a bridge. Before that, some college kids stole it and held it captive for a time. A hand-written sign on the roosterʼs back now reads: “No sitting!
Keep off. You are being watched.”

Cloquet Voyageur

Just beneath the Highway 33 bridge in Cloquet, youʼll find this giant fiberglass voyageur along with a replica fort, in Dunlap Island Park. It was dedicated in July of 1976 by then-Senator Hubert H. Humphrey. Itʼs a symbol of the early settlement in Carlton County.

Paul Bunyan’s Marble

This enormous ball of granite is said to be one of the marbles that got away from Paul Bunyan as he and Babe the Blue Ox made their way across Minnesota. It weighs more than four tons and is on display at the Minnesota Museum of Mining.

Try their infamous Long Island Iced Tea — if you dare!

Deer Lake covers 4,156 acres and is roughly 5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide and known as one of the clearest lakes in Minnesota. The deep, crystal clear water has visibility up to 11 feet -– talk about scenic! It is often referred to as the lake of “changing colors.” Because of its mineral-content, the color of the lake seems to turn a brilliant blue-green on bright summer day. Also if you are hiking the 26-mile Cut Foot Sioux National Recreation Area trail, it runs right through the Deer Lake campgrounds, making it a great overnight stop. Deer Lake’s amazing color, along with its many islands and miles of scenic shoreline, make Deer Lake a top lake to experience.

It’s a water sports-happy lake! Tucked up way up in the furthest north notch of Minnesota is one of the most Scenic lakes in the Country. Made of over 65,000 miles of shoreline and over 14,000 islands this trip is worth the ride. Visit Zippel Bay State Park and enjoy a beautiful view of the lake, or take advantage of the water activities: water skiing, wake boarding, jet skiing, kayaking or canoeing on a calm day. Canoeing in the summer, ice skating in the winter, this lake is considered the best lake in your backyard, because it’s pretty much located in a neighborhood. Though it spans 120 acres and is completely open for public use, the lake was developed to enhance the quality of life in the Minneapolis area. Lake of the Isles is the perfect location for a picnic on the water, a game of Frisbee, jogging or a walk with the pup to the off-leash dog park. Swimming is not advised, but plenty of other activities will keep you busy. And you don’t have to spend all day to get there!
