BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (WCCO) — Police officers are investigating a murder that happened in Brooklyn Center.

A person called 911 Monday to check on the welfare of his co-worker.

Police went to the house in the 5400 block of Girard Ave N. around 8 p.m. When they arrived, they found a man inside that had died from a gunshot wound.

Police are not releasing the name of the victim until he has been positively identified by family. It is believed he lived in the home where he was found.

The investigation is ongoing and the Brooklyn Center Police Department is being assisted by Hennepin County Crime Lab and the Medical Examiner’s Office.

The motive for the murder remains unknown at this time, police said. If you have any information related to this crime you are encouraged to contact law enforcement.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A 33-year-old man is charged with murder for a fatal shooting at a downtown hotel.

Brian Vincent Griffin, of Dayton, Minn., was charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder for a weekend shooting that resulted in the death of Jeremy Shannon at the Millennium Hotel.

Police say Griffin also shot at another man in the hotel room.

According to the criminal complaint, Griffin, Shannon and two other men were smoking meth in a hotel room. Around 2:15 a.m. Saturday, Griffin stood up and walked to the door, as though he was leaving the room. That’s when police say he pulled a gun from his waist band and started shooting at Shannon and the other men.

Griffin admitted to police that Shannon and the other men were talking about things that made him nervous and he intended to leave but then thought, “I have to do this,” according to the criminal complaint.

Griffin was found hiding in a closet at the nearby Hilton Hotel in Minneapolis, shortly after the shooting. No one else was hit by the bullets, according to police.

Officers were called around 9:15 p.m. on Jan. 7 to Tom’s Popcorn Shop, 4708 Cedar Ave. S., for a robbery call. Upon arrival, a female employee told them a man entered the business with a knife and demanded money.

The suspect was described as a black man with medium complexion and a goatee, between the age of 20 to 30 years old, about 5-foot-8 with a medium to heavy build. He was wearing a puffy black jacket with a hood and carrying a black backpack at the time of the incident.

The Minneapolis Police Department’s Robbery Unit is investigating. Anyone with information in the case is asked to call 612-673-3648.

Officials say shortly after 1 a.m. on Feb. 1, 85-year-old Robert Nelson woke up to a man with a handgun inside his home, in the midst of a robbery.

Police say the man assaulted Nelson, who suffered cuts to his face that required hospitalization.

The suspected robber was dressed in dark clothing and a ski mask. Police believe he wasn’t acting alone.

Nelson’s home is located on Latoka Drive, just west of County Road 45.

The suspect stole Nelson’s high school class ring — a 1943 gold ring with a large “L” from Lynd High School, with the initials “R.N.”

The robber also stole a red, plastic Folgers coffee container full of coins.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects in this incident.

Frances “Vicki” Swenson, mother of 38-year-old Lynda Swenson, said Monday afternoon that a neighbor found her daughter’s Dynavox Touch Talker – a device worth $7,800 – in his yard.

The Touch Talker went missing last Friday morning, when Vicki Swenson said she set the device on the ground outside her house in a duffel bag. After setting the Touch Talker down, she went back inside to get her daughter so that they could catch a bus. But when she returned outside, she saw the duffel bag was gone.

St. Paul police confirmed Monday that the bag and the device had been stolen.

Vicki Swenson said she thinks someone just wanted the bag, noting that they wouldn’t have a use for the Touch Talker.

Indeed, the bag is still missing. However, the Swensons say they are just happy to have Lynda’s voice back.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A 22-year-old St. Paul man has been accused of burglarizing a Wayzata jewelry store and is being linked to others, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.

Virgil Lee Kirkwood was charged with one felony count of third-degree burglary in connection to the Wayzata burglary, which occurred on Nov. 5, 2011.

According to the criminal complaint, Wayzata Police responded to a commercial business alarm at Shelly Storch Fine Jewelry located on 1250 East Wayzata Boulevard. When they arrived, officered found the business was closed and a large store front window had been broken. Inside, several jewelry display cases were also broken and numerous pieces of jewelry were reported missing.

Investigators managed to extract a sample of blood found on a damaged display case, which was sent to the crime lab for analysis. Later, on Feb. 3, 2012, a report of DNA testing of the blood matched the DNA of Kirkwood, who was on file with the FBI.

Kirkwood is also being linked to similar jewelry store burglaries in Anoka and Ramsey counties.

If convicted, Kirkwood could face up to five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.

The man, Jeffery Lewis Young, was stopped for speeding on Highway 70 around 3:54 p.m. on Sunday in Maromette, Wis.

He was pulled over and then arrested for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated with a child — his 8th DWI offense.

Young was transported to the Burnett County Jail.

WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) — A 53-year-old South St. Paul man has been charged with theft, after police say he stole thousands of dollars worth of detergent from a retailer.

According to the criminal complaint, Patrick Paul Costanzo was spotted on surveillance video pushing carts full of detergent out of a store without paying for it.

Police met with a loss prevention employee at the store in West St. Paul who said the inventory audit showed an abnormal loss of Tide laundry detergent.

According to loss prevention, the total thefts documented on video surveillance was estimated at approximately $6,000. They also told police that over the past 15 months, inventory reports showed a loss of $25,000 in missing laundry detergent.

Video surveillance showed the same man taking detergent and other items on four out of five days during the week, without paying for it.

On Feb. 8, the suspect, later identified as Costanzo, entered the store and attempted to push out another cart of items without paying for them but was detained by staff.

Video surveillance showed that in addition to the date of Costanzo’s arrest, he was seen at the store on 28 days between Jan. 1 and Feb. 7, selecting laundry detergent and other items. The total amount of merchandise taken between those dates was $6,339.09.

Deputy Chief Rick Hart said they got a call around 1 a.m. about a fight at the TGI Fridays on 2201 Killebrew Drive.

The 911 call stated there were as many as 30 people fighting inside the restaurant. When officers arrived, they found a few people still fighting inside and outside the building.

Seven people were arrested for third-degree riot and five people were treated and released from a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No officers were injured in the incident.

Hart said they believe the fighting started when two groups of people, sitting next to each other, got into a verbal argument and it escalated from there.

Hart said people began throwing menus, glasses, plates and silverware at each other.

The restaurant estimates it has about $1,500 in damages.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Minneapolis Police are investigating the first homicide of the year after a shooting at a downtown hotel early Saturday morning. Brian Griffin, a 33-year-old man, is now behind bars awaiting charges.

Visitors at the Millennium Hotel came and went Saturday, unaware of the police presence earlier this morning after the shooting.

“I didn’t hear anything at night or anything,” said Janelle Bengtson, a guest at the Millennium Hotel.

It was around 2:30 a.m. when Minneapolis Police found a man dead inside a hotel room, the victim of a shooting. Several people had rented a room on one of the upper floors of the hotel.

“We don’t believe there’s a public safety risk, sounds like these parties possibly knew each other,” said Sgt. Steve McCarty of the Minneapolis Police Department.

An arrest came quickly and not far away. Officers heard the alleged shooter ran to the Hyatt across the street.  A short time later, police had Griffin in handcuffs.

“Knowing there’s an arrest, I’m definitely glad to know that,” said Bengtson.

It is the first homicide of the year in Minneapolis and happened in an area not accustomed to seeing violent crime.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim Saturday afternoon as 33-year-old Jeremy Robert Shannon, a white man from Minneapolis. The report says Shannon died on the ninth floor of the hotel from several multiple wounds.

“I’ve been a police officer in this city 21 years and I haven’t seen any shootings, let alone homicides, at our downtown hotels,” said Sgt. McCarty.

“It is pretty shocking, like I mentioned earlier, I do feel like this area is a lot safer than most areas,” said Erica Villarreal, who lives nearby.

Police do think there were witnesses to this shooting and are asking anyone with information to give them a call at 612-692-TIPS (8477).

He is now at a medium security prison in Terre Haute, Ind. He has been moved twice already this week, first from the easy going prison camp in Duluth he has called home for the last year. Terre Haute however is not his final destination, it remains to be seen what is.

According to sources, Hecker has gotten into repeated trouble for abuse of phone privileges and has gotten caught more than once with smuggled cell phones. It is remarkable that despite Hecker’s dizzying descent from a life of unparalleled extravagance to being hauled off to jail, that the arrogance remains.

As he serves out the remainder of a 10 year fraud sentence, the investigation into his dealings by the bankruptcy trustee Randy Seaver continues. Seaver has suggested repeatedly in recent court filings that he believes that Hecker is continuing to hide assets. Hecker’s sentence of 10 years was far harsher than it would have been had he played by the Feds’ game and obeyed the rules.

Instead he flouted them as he apparently continues to do today. Perhaps these were the same traits that led him to do so well for so many years in business. But these are also the traits that made his fall and his continued descent all the more breathtaking and humiliating.

Abdi Hussein Sheikh was charged with one felony count of fleeing police in a motor vehicle in connection with the Feb. 6 incident.

According to a criminal complaint, Minneapolis Police officers were involved with a traffic stop when a car driven by a Somali man, later identified as Sheikh, stopped across the street from the officers at the intersection of Washington Avenue North and 2nd Avenue North.

Sheikh was yelling loud at the officers and blasting his car audio before police told him to move along.

After a short time passed, he returned to the scene, yelled loudly again at officers and appeared to be holding something in his hand. The complaint states that’s when police pointed a gun at him and ordered him to stop. Sheikh refused, and a chase ensued. Officers learned that his car had been reported stolen the day before.

Shiekh led police through Minneapolis, even stopping his car at the light rail platform on 3rd Avenue South and 5th Street. Officers tried to get him out of his locked car and even smashed out his window, but Sheikh knocked a gun out of an officer’s hand and his flee continued, according to the complaint.

Sheikh went through the streets of downtown Minneapolis at 80 to 90 miles per hour before police executed a pit maneuver, causing him to crash near 46th and Lake Street. He was placed under arrest, was hostile with police and then claimed to authorities that he was “Osama Bin Laden Jr.”

An investigation revealed the car he was driving was reported stolen on Feb. 4. Sheikh was arrested and is currently in the Hennepin County Jail.

If convicted, he faces up to three years in jail and a $5,000 fine.

Police said they received a report of a bank robbery at about 12:10 p.m. Friday at the People’s Bank of Commerce in Princeton. Authorities said it was robbed by a white adult female who was wearing a black winter jacket, black hat and blue jeans at the time of the robbery.

It is unknown if the woman left the bank with any money, but she did leave the bank heading west.

The suspect is described as 5 feet, 3 inches to 5 feet, 6 inches tall with a thin build. Her face was partially covered during the robbery.

As authorities searched the area for the suspect, officials called for a temporary lockdown at Princeton High School and South Elementary School.

According the Pine County Sheriff’s Office, on Jan. 5, 2012, deputies responded to the Wal-Mart store in Pine City in response to a complaint of fraudulent prescriptions.

An investigation revealed the person used the identities to fill the prescriptions six times between Nov. 7, 2011 and Jan. 3, 2012, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The prescriptions totaled approximately 720 tablets of Hydrocodone, which is a narcotic drug. Each tablet has a street value of around $10.

The Sheriff’s Office said Bobbie Jo Hanson was charged in Pine County District Court with six counts of second-degree possession of narcotics and one count of identity theft.

Hanson’s bail has been set at $20,000 with conditions and $50,000 without condition.

Alan Didi Wiedrick was charged with misdemeanor counts of obstruction of the legal process and disobeying order of a police officer.

According to a complaint, Roseville Police were called to Wiedrick’s home on Monday after reports that he had posted Facebook messages indicating that he had tried to kill himself earlier in the day. The messages included that he was contemplating suicide and that he had hostility toward police.

When officers arrived, he was hostile toward them and appeared to be in possession of a pistol, according to a complaint. Officers then backed out of the home and got assistance from negotiators and a local SWAT team.

After about six hours of trying to communicate with Wiedrick, the SWAT team deployed tear gas into his home. About an hour later, Wiedrick was arrested when he tried to flee from the home’s lower level.

Officers at the scene also recovered a firearm that he had when police initially confronted him. If convicted, Wiedrick faces up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Donald Thompson was charged with first-degree arson in connection with the incident, which happened Tuesday.

According to a complaint, fire crews were called to the Willows Apartment complex on the 6500 block of 67th Avenue North on a report of a fire in progress. When authorities arrived, the fire was still active and tenants had to evacuate the area.

Authorities said the fire appeared to start in the laundry room on the third floor of the complex. It also appeared to be suspicious as there had been at least two previous fires in the same spot in the past six months. The fire caused smoke and other fire-related damage to the laundry room and hallway of the building.

The laundry room where the fire started is next door to Thompson’s apartment, the complaint states.

Surveillance video identified Thompson as the person responsible for the previous fires in the laundry room. He was arrested the morning after the fire this week, but denied any involvement in the arson.

He was then shown surveillance video of himself setting the fire on Tuesday and admitted to being responsible for it, the complaint states. He set the fire by throwing lit matches onto a liquid on the laundry room floor. He then heard an explosion and saw that the room was on fire.

Thompson told police he set the fire because he wanted to move into a smaller unit in the complex, but management wouldn’t allow him to move for a reduced rent.

If convicted, Thompson faces up to 20 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A man accused of burglarizing several high-end homes in the Twin Cities has been caught in the act.

Police say 43-year-old Stewart Pesheck is suspected of burglarizing more than 20 homes in several communities. They include Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Carver County, Deephaven, Edina, Hennepin County, Lakeville, Minneapolis, Maple Grove, south Lake Minnetonka and Washington County.  Police in Edina report at least seven break-ins between April 1 and May 31, 2011.

According to a criminal complaint, Pesheck was caught in the act by police who spotted him leaving an Eden Prairie residence that had just been robbed on Monday.  Police had been doing surveillance on Pesheck.

“He was very efficient and very quick at it,” said Sgt. Dennis Paulson with the Eden Prairie Police Department.

Police said they saw Pesheck drive to a residence and leave the vehicle unattended in the driveway. Moments later, the garage door opened and Pesheck was seen driving his vehicle into the garage. Several minutes later, he drove out of the garage and away from the residence, according to the criminal complaint.

After Pesheck left, police noticed the rear door had been forced open with a pry tool and several wires had been cut to the back of the home. Officers said the resident found several items missing, including jewelry, laptops and a flat screen TV.

Police searched Pesheck’s vehicle and found all the missing items, plus a pry bar, three pairs of gloves, a pair of wire cutters and a needle nose pliers.

In many of the previous cases, Pesheck had allegedly cut wires to home security systems and stole jewelry and other expensive items. Police said when they searched his home in Richfield, they found jewelry and other expensive items totaling thousands of dollars.

Police say Pesheck used different vehicles and never registered them, so they had a hard time finding him initially.  He was in jail last year for several months, then was released on bail.  Once he was out, police said he started hitting homes again.

The Hennepin County Attorney officially charged Pesheck in Hennepin County District Court on Wednesday with one felony count of second-degree burglary. He’s expected to be charged for the other burglaries soon too.

Pesheck would simply go into a neighborhood, drive around and pick what home to hit.

“Based on what he saw, if there were no vehicles in a driveway, he’d just stop and get lucky,” said Sgt. Paulson.

Police said this case is a good reminder for all homeowners to remember to lock their doors and be alert to suspicious activity and cars they see.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) — A St. Paul man convicted of raping and assaulting a child, once again faces charges. His neighbors were never alerted of his past because he isn’t on the sex offender registry.

Police arrested 60-year-old Elijah Caliph Monday, for attempted criminal sexual conduct. The victim is a child who lives in his building.

Nancy Rosenblum thought she knew the neighbor who lived down the hall for years.

“I’ve known him since I moved in,” she said.

So, the sight of police outside Caliph’s door came as a surprise.

“It shocked me when I found out why they arrested him. I said, you’ve got to be kidding,” said Rosenblum.

According to the criminal complaint, Caliph lured a boy to his apartment and then unzipped his pants. The boy ran and when police arrived they found an autistic young man inside Caliph’s home. The older boy denied any physical or sexual contact with Caliph.

“I mean there’s kids running all through this building. There’s children that live here,” she said.

Caliph’s criminal history includes raping a child back in 1980 in Illinois. It’s a conviction that Rosenblum would expect to learn about through the sex offender registry.

“I never knew it wasn’t just automatic. I took it for granted,” said Rosenblum.

The sex offender registration laws in Minnesota didn’t take effect until the early 1990s.

It doesn’t include anyone who completed their sentence before the law took effect.

“A lot of different issues trying to go back,” said Mark Bliven, with the Department of Corrections.

The laws also don’t include notification for level one or two sex offenders. The community is only alerted for a level three. The idea there, is that too many alerts would lose the effectiveness, when it’s really needed for those who are at the highest risk of re-offending.

“Worrying about all the registered offenders or have bad history in the state is probably not going to be that helpful to most people,” said Bliven.

Bliven said what is helpful is to really get to know the people you deal with on a daily basis.

“Know a little more about their background. That’s what we should be doing to enhance our safety,” said Bliven.

It’s a step Rosenblum may take more seriously to protect those around her.

“I’m the type of person that would let everyone else know the office know because that is not acceptable,” she said.

Part of the challenge in retroactively adding people to the sex offender registry list is inconsistent record keeping.

Right now, there are 17,000 registered sex offenders in Minnesota.

The incident happened at about 2:16 p.m. on the 1800 block of S. Highway 61. Lake City officers responded to the scene after a woman reported that her boyfriend at the residence had told her to leave, then fired a weapon in the home.

The woman thought the gunshot hit the floor, police said.

Officers from Lake City, Wabasha, Goodhue County and the Minnesota State Patrol followed by setting up a containment area around the home and evacuating residents. Authorities made contact with the suspect, who agreed to come out of the home.

When he came out, he had a gunshot wound to his right shoulder that is believed to be self-inflicted, authorities said. The man’s name has not yet been released as the incident is still under investigation.

The Lake City community was shocked and saddened when one of its own officers, Shawn Schneider, was shot and killed by a man on Dec. 19, 2011, while responding to a domestic dispute. That man eventually took his own life.

Aka Lawrence Fualefeh was charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct in connection with the incident, which happened last September in Fridley.

According to a criminal complaint, Fridley Police were called to a home on the 1000 block of Norton Avenue NE on Sept. 25, 2011, on a report of criminal sexual conduct. When authorities arrived, they spoke with the homeowner who said he has several immigrant families from Cameroon who live in the house with his family.

The homeowner told police that a 5-year-old girl told him that she was kissed inappropriately by a man later identified as Fualefeh. The homeowner told police that there had also been previous allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct involving Fualefeh with another child living at the home.

According to the complaint, an Anoka County Sheriff met with the victim, who said Fualefeh woke her up and told her to follow him downstairs. He had the 5-year-old girl lay down on the floor and started kissing her. He also engaged in inappropriate sexual acts with the girl.

If convicted, Fualefeh faces up to 30 years in prison and a $40,000 fine.

ROSEVILLE (WCCO) — It takes bullets like Superman, drives up to 95 mph and it’s property of the Roseville Police Department.

In August 2010, the East Metro Swat Team received a $265,000 federal grant and purchased what’s called the “Bearcat.” Because it was paid for with a federal grant, it can be used by both local and federal agencies.

Originally designed for military combat, it’s an armored vehicle the SWAT team invested in with hopes of keeping local police officers safe.

“Some guys call it ‘the kitty,’” said John Jorgenson of the East Metro Swat Team

Jorgenson says it is changing the way they do business. Many times, the vehicle works strictly on intimidation.

“We’ll turn on the lights and siren, and we’ve had people just surrender to the vehicle,” said Jorgenson.

The 365 horsepower vehicle’s features explain its $256,000 price tag.

There’s the bullet-proof turret that rotates for protection and gives SWAT members the option to shoot a weapon if necessary. It also has door and window ramming abilities.

It has a weight that will make your mouth drop.

“(It’s) 16,000 pounds, so yeah, it’s pretty heavy,” said Jorgenson.

However, perhaps it’s the things you can’t see that are most impressive.

“We have a $35,000 thermal imager,” said Jorgenson. “This allows us to be able to reach out and look at different things.”

You can’t see what it’s really made of until night time.

“The camera picks up on the person’s body heat, and that’s how you can tell there’s a person within your view,” said Jorgenson.

Other times, the vehicle is the only thing separating East Metro SWAT members from the bad guys.

“It’s the safest place to put our team if things start going bad,” said Jorgenson.

There are five total Bearcats in Minnesota.

Mark Allen Busse is already serving a 30-year sentence for photographing and filming pornographic images of three girls and one boy who were all under the age of 10.

In the plea agreement, Busse admitted that on April 20, 2008, he took pictures and filmed one girl while she was sleeping. He also admitted in 2006 that he took photos of a second girl while she was sleeping. In 2008, he admitted to taking pictures and video of a third girl and a boy. In every instance, the images produced showed the children engaged in sexually explicit content.

According to the complaint, the videos clearly showed Busse fondling and penetrating both victims. Busse abused and photographed the third victim throughout 2006.

In addition to 30 years, Busse will have 25 years of supervised release.

On Thursday afternoon, Mark Edward Wetch, 49, was charged with 13 counts of armed bank robbery in connection to 13 bank robberies between March 9, 2011 and Jan. 3, 2012.

His indictment alleges that Wetsch robbed a bank in Brewster, Alexandria, Hastings, St. Peter, Albertville, Richfield, Gaylord, Hampton, Faribault, Eden Prairie, Cologne and two in Minneapolis.

The amount Wetsch allegedly stole is said to be approximately $69,104.

If convicted, Wetsch could face up to 25 years in prison for each count.

Liana Claassen, who had been the business manager for the Chokio-Alberta School District, was charged on May 2, 2011, with one count of wire fraud in connection with the crime. She pleaded guilty on July 29, 2011.

In her plea agreement, she admitted that between July of 1999 and August of 2010, she used the school district’s computer to pay herself more money than her salary dictated. As the business manager for the school district, Claassen was responsible for the payroll for all district employees and was trusted to authorize bank transfers.

She also admitted to illegally transferring money to her retirement account and covering up the scheme by making misrepresentations to her employers about the district’s financial condition.

Claassen was also ordered to pay more than $260,000 in restitution.

ST. PAUL (WCCO) — Neighbors helped rescue a family from a fire at a St. Paul duplex early Thursday morning.

Firefighters were called to the 1000 block of Marion Street just before 5 a.m.

St. Paul Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard said a woman living in the lower level of the duplex heard a pop and went outside to investigate because her daughter’s family was living in the upper level.

She went out and saw huge fire on the outside staircase — the only entrance and exit to the upstairs unit.

Neighbors heard the woman outside screaming for the family upstairs, so they came out to help wake up the four people — a 28-year-old woman, her boyfriend, and her two kids, ages 4 and 7.

Neighbors said they threw rocks at the windows and yelled until the family awoke. Then they ran and pulled a mattress out of their home so the woman could throw her kids out the window. Neighbors caught the kids, but the mattress was used as a precaution.

Meanwhile, firefighters arrived and were able to get a ladder to rescue the man and woman still inside. The woman slipped on the ladder and hurt her ankle while evacuating. The man was ill, but it is not clear if it was from the fire or another medical condition. Both were brought to the hospital to be checked out and are OK. The children are also doing fine, according to Zaccard.

The only other injury was a firefighter at the scene who slipped off the roof. He had minor injuries that were checked out at the hospital, too.

Zaccard believes it is an arson fire, but they don’t know yet if the family was targeted or if it was random.

“When someone intentionally sets fire to an occupied residence like this, blocking their escape, they’re trying to kill someone,” said Zaccard. “Arson is not just a crime against property, it’s most certainly a crime against innocent people, too.”

The fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes.

Zaccard said there were smoke detectors in the home that were working.

The home had a lot of smoke and water damage, estimated at $120,000.
