In the end, most stations do not make money on gasoline. They make their profits on Car Washes and items inside the store.
Jeff is right, but I just wanted to add that gas stations actually tend to lose money on transaction that occur at the pump. Pay at the pump is great, but not when the business is losing money. Credit card fees on certain cards can actually kill a business!
