Several Big-Name Comedians Snubbed For Tony Awards

WCBS 880′s Jim Taylor shares his thoughts on Broadway and the 2011 Tony Awards. He will be blogging about his picks and predictions on the nominees, and will cover the awards from the red carpet on June 12th.

A funny thing happened on the way to the Tony nominations this year: Several guys known for being funny were not nominated.

Robin Williams

The first big snub is Robin Williams, who was not nominated in Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo.Meanwhile, his very talented co-star Arian Moayed is so honored.

Chris Rock

Same story for Chris Rock. In what is very much his show, The Mother****** With the Hat, it's the always believable Bobby Cannavalle who gets the nomination.

John Leguizamo

"Ghetto Klown" Broadway John Leguizamo

And then there's John Leguizamo, who's Ghetto Klown is completely ignored.

And more...

Paul Reubens' return to the spotlight: The Pee Wee Herman Show was also ignored. It could be that the Tonys have a thing about solo shows and funny guys. A couple of other male performances that are MIA: James Earl Jones in Driving Miss Daisy, Benjamin Walker in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, and the incredible Mark Rylance in La Bette -- although that's probably because he's so incredible in Jerusalem. And don't talk to me about Harry Potter. If Daniel Radcliffe keeps plugging away as earnestly as he is right now, something good is bound to happen to the lad.
