Jason Matheson returns to WCCO-TV as a contributor to WCCO 4 News at 5 and various newscasts. The move comes nearly 20 years after beginning his TV career here. He “paid his dues,” as they say, working as the overnight dispatcher on the weekends, listening to scanners for breaking news and eventually moving his way up through the assignment desk.
In the spring of 2000, Matheson moved to KMSP-TV as executive producer of “The Buzz,” a long-running and highly popular daily entertainment segment that covered local and national entertainment. Within months of his arrival at KMSP, he was moved in front of the camera as film critic for the station’s newly launched morning show. During his time at KMSP, Matheson interviewed hundreds of celebrities, including Ewan McGregor, Cher, Will Smith, Arthur Miller, George Clooney, and many more. In a “trial by fire” moment, his first-day assignment at KMSP was to go to Paisley Park to produce a segment with local music legend Prince.
In 2008, his profile on KMSP grew, as Matheson launched and hosted the entertainment show, “The Weekend Buzz.” A short time later, he launched and became co-host of “The Buzz,” a daily infotainment show airing weekday mornings. And, if that wasn’t enough, he was then promoted to co-anchor the early editions of “The FOX 9 Morning News.”
At the same time his TV life was growing Matheson took on a new challenge as host of a daily radio show on WFMP-FM. After an initial launch in the afternoons, his show can now be heard in the coveted morning drive slot in the Twin Cities.
In 2010, he was named one of the “40 under 40,” the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal’s list of young community leaders. And, a short time later, the Minnesota Jaycees named Jason one of the Ten Outstanding Young Minnesotans, an honor previously given to Walter Mondale and Dave Winfield among others.
Jason’s been nominated for five Regional Emmy Awards and he’s won three, including a Regional Emmy Award for “The Buzz.”
Jason writes for Minneapolis-St. Paul Magazine’s website for their popular “Real Groom” blog, where he shares his views and adventures on planning his upcoming wedding.
Originally from Michigan City, Ind. Jason attended Columbia College in Chicago with a focus on television production … and tracking down Oprah. He made the Twin Cities his home in 1997 and knew right away this is where he belonged. He now lives in the Lake Calhoun area of Minneapolis with his partner Collin and his kid-with-fur, Dexter.
