Shane Kitzman joined WCCO as a Web Producer in April 2012.
A native of Northfield, Minn. – you know, where the infamous bank robber Jesse James was thwarted – Shane graduated from the University of St. Thomas in 2010 with a degree in journalism.
While at St. Thomas, Shane was the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, The Aquin. He also became the director of the new student media endeavor, TommieMedia.com, which focused on 24/7 journalism and multimedia reporting. During the summer of 2009, he interned at the Rochester Post-Bulletin.
After graduation, Shane headed back home, briefly covering news for his hometown newspaper, before being promoted to Sports Editor of the Northfield News and covering Division III sports and prep athletics. Selected as the Associated Press New Journalist of the Year in Minnesota in 2009-10, his sports stories, photos and videos have won numerous state press awards and his feature writing has garnered national honors.
So what’s Shane up to now? Finding the best sports stories in the state and featuring them through his column “Beyond Bounds.”
Disclaimer: Male readers especially, unless you are eager for a self-conscious day at the gym tomorrow, I’d advise you to stop read right … about … now. When Hamline’s three-time All-American thrower Becky Culp hits [...]
When Burnsville’s Tyler Hanson lined up at wide receiver this fall for the Blaze – playing pigskin for the first time, ever – one of the state’s standout baseball players had a revelation.
For Cory Svihla, donning horns on his helmet and hustling through drills at Winter Park last week alongside the Vikings’ coveted draft picks made the last two years of grinding it out completely worth it.
Before I could get the remainder of the word “year” out of my mouth as part of the question “What are you goals this year?” senior Matt Hopfner cut me off.
Dear hiring managers in Minnesota … Dennis Granath already has a polished LinkedIn, but I’ve taken the liberty to morph this blog of mine into in-depth — and yet truthfully entertaining — resume for Mr. Granath.
Take a glance at the MIAC women’s tennis standings and there’s an unfamiliar name atop it. St. Kate’s? A team that has never won the league title? … How? Senior captain and No. 2 singles [...]
Standard conversational topics – tennis, school, his part-time post office job – appeared to marginally pique Austin Jiang’s interest.
What Dylan Thomas has – a right arm that throws 93 mph with more than enough control to be named the 2012 MIAC’s Pitcher of the Year.
The luckiest fan at the Twins’ Opening Day may just have been 6-year-old Keera O’Brien.
Before freshman Rachel Parupsky even donned a Bethel basketball jersey, she came all too close to giving it up.
Pretty sure Erik Tengwall had a better weekend than you did. The St. Thomas junior’s No. 1-ranked basketball team eked out a 63-62 win at home and advanced to an NCAA D-III Elite Eight match [...]
Macalester junior Renee Jordan has crossed paths with black bears, she’s nearly biked into a moose, and even plans to ascend Mount McKinley in her father’s footsteps.
If St. Thomas basketball’s assistant coach Mike Keating were to snag a nasty little paper cut while dishing out scouting reports, I’m certain his blood would not be a maroon hue.
I can’t believe Lindsey Hjelm’s success with what can only be explained as a successfully split personality. Gustavus’ all-time leader in penalty minutes is known the “Penalty Queen” around campus.
Andrew Martinson is a 21st-century, red-blooded American man.
