David Price pitched Detroit to its fourth straight AL Central title with the type of performance the Tigers acquired him for, taking a shutout into the eighth inning of a 3-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday that wrapped up the division on the regular season’s final day.
Eduardo Escobar had a homer, four hits and a career-high six RBIs, and the Minnesota Twins ensured that the AL Central race will come down to the very end with a 12-3 rout of the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night.
Rick Porcello allowed six runs in under four innings Friday, and Detroit lost 11-4 to the Minnesota Twins on a night the Tigers had hoped to clinch the AL Central title. Detroit could have wrapped up the division with a victory and a Kansas City loss, but Porcello (15-13) endured another rough outing down the stretch, and the Tigers fell way behind early. Oswaldo Arcia hit a two-run homer in the first, and Minnesota led 6-0 in the fourth.
Bruce Chen bounced back with a solid start and the Kansas City Royals completed a sweep for their fifth straight win, beating Minnesota 3-1 Thursday and handing the Twins their fifth loss in a row. The Royals outscored Minnesota 17-3 in sweeping the three-game series.
Since Opening Day on March 30th, teams in the American League Central Division have played approximately fifty games, and already massive disparities have set in.
