University of Minnesota seniors Andre Hollins and Maurice Walker were recognized by the Big Ten Conference on Monday, which handed out its end-of-season awards to the league’s top players.
D.J. Newbill pulled up and calmly swished a 3-pointer at the buzzer, giving him 31 points to lift Penn State to a 79-76 victory over Minnesota on Sunday.
Andre Hollins finished with 23 points, while Maurice Walker and DeAndre Mathieu scored 12 points apiece for the Gophers (16-10, 5-8), who had a three-game win streak snapped.

Maurice Walker sank two free throws with 11 seconds left to help Minnesota beat Iowa 64-59 on Thursday night. Walker finished with seven points on 1-of-5 shooting, but went 5 of 6 from the line. Andre Hollins led Minnesota (16-9, 5-7 Big Ten) with 20 points, making 7 of 14 from the field.
Andre Hollins scored 18 points and Minnesota held Purdue scoreless for the first five minutes of the second half in a 62-58 victory on Saturday. Joey King added 11 for the Golden Gophers (15-9, 4-7 Big Ten), who broke the game open with a 21-2 run coming out of the break. The Gophers forced eight of Purdue’s season-high 23 turnovers during the surge, and then held on for dear life.
Mo Walker led Minnesota with 19 points and eight rebounds and Andre Hollins added 12 points, helping the Gophers avenge a recent loss to Nebraska with a 60-42 victory over the sputtering Huskers on Saturday. Hollins had six assists and five rebounds, too, and the Gophers (14-9, 3-7) bounced back from their latest of six Big Ten losses by five points or fewer.
D.J. Newbill scored 12 points, Jordan Dickerson blocked a shot with 4 seconds left and Penn State held off a late Minnesota rally to defeat the Gophers 63-58 Wednesday night. Penn State (14-7, 2-6 Big Ten) led by 10 points at the half but the Gophers (13-9, 2-7) shot their way back into a 46-45 lead before Devin Foster gave the Lions a lead they would hold for their second straight conference victory.
Andre Hollins helped Minnesota pull away with 17 of his 28 points in the second half, fueling a 79-71 victory Saturday over Illinois. Hollins finished 10 for 15 from the field, including 5 for 7 from 3-point range, and grabbed five rebounds for the Golden Gophers (13-8, 2-6 Big Ten). Carlos Morris had 13 of his 16 points in the first half, Mo Walker chipped in 12 points and 13 rebounds and Nate Mason added 10 points and six assists.
Andre Hollins spun around after swishing a 3-pointer on the second straight possession, flashing a wide smile as he held up three fingers next to his forehead.

Derrick Walton and Caris LeVert scored 15 points apiece, and Michigan rallied for a 62-57 victory over Minnesota on Saturday. The Wolverines (10-6, 3-1 Big Ten) trailed 49-40 after Minnesota’s Nate Mason made 3-pointer with 8:56 remaining, but the Golden Gophers (11-6, 0-4) went nearly seven minutes before their next field goal, struggling to convert against Michigan’s 1-3-1 defense.
DeAndre Mathieu, Andre Hollins and the rest of their Minnesota teammates badly need to bounce back this week. The Gophers lost road games at Purdue and Maryland to start Big Ten play.
Carlos Morris scored a season-high 19 points, Mo Walker had 15 points and six rebounds and Minnesota romped past Seattle 92-57 Friday for its sixth straight victory. Andre Hollins and Nate Mason each added 15 points for the Gophers (9-2), who returned from an eight-day game break for final exams with another noncompetitive nonconference tuneup.

Mo Walker and Carlos Morris each scored 11 points while DeAndre Mathieu added 10 points and five assists for the Gophers (8-2), who shot 54.7 percent from the field and led by as many as 37 points in the second half.
The Big Ten Conference announced Monday that two University of Minnesota basketball players have been given player of the week honors. Senior guard Andre Hollins was named the Player of the Week on the men’s side after helping lead the Gophers to wins over Wake Forest and Western Carolina.

Austin Hollins scored 18 points, Deandre Mathieu added 13 and Andre Hollins hit a late 3-pointer Thursday to give Minnesota a badly needed 63-56 win over Penn State in the Big Ten tournament. The seventh-seeded Golden Gophers (20-12) advanced to Friday night’s quarterfinal against No. 12 Wisconsin with their third win in four games. 10th-seeded Penn State (15-17) had a miserable night shooting, making only 32.2 percent from the field. D.J. Newbill had 16 points and senior Tim Frazier added 11. Penn State heads home from Indianapolis after losing for the third time in four games.
The Big Ten Conference handed out its season honors on Monday with the league’s postseason tournament a few days away, and a pair of Gophers were recognized. Junior guards Andre Hollins and DeAndre Mathieu were both named to the All-Big Ten Honorable Mention team.
Sam Thompson scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half, leading No. 24 Ohio State back from a 12-point deficit to a 64-46 victory over Minnesota on Saturday night. The Buckeyes outscored the Golden Gophers 46-18 in the second half. Lenzelle Smith Jr. added 13 points and Shannon Scott 10 for the Buckeyes (22-6, 9-6 Big Ten), who trailed by 10 at the half and by 12 early in the second half before taking control with a 17-0 run.
Andre Hollins led Minnesota (17-10, 6-8) with 15 points, and Austin Hollins and Mo Walker each added 10. The Gophers have lost six of their last nine games.
DeAndre Mathieu scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half and Minnesota came back to defeat cold-shooting Northwestern 54-48 on Sunday.
Gopher forward Joey King say there’s nothing like a Gopher-Wisconsin game. “Just the opportunity to play Wisconsin, it’s something that people from Minnesota really look forward to,” King said. The win the first time may have changed the Gopher’s season. It also changed the way teams see Mo Walker, a key down the stretch, according to Coach Richard Pitino.
DeAndre Mathieu had 10 of his 16 points in the second half, helping Minnesota overtake Indiana for a 66-60 victory on Saturday night to end a three-game losing streak. Maurice Walker pitched in 14 points and eight rebounds, and Andre Hollins added 10 points for the Gophers (16-8, 5-6 Big Ten), who lost to Nebraska, Northwestern and Purdue over the last two weeks by a total of eight points. This time, they came through in the closing minutes.
