New Twisted Trees Produce Apples On Their Own

There’s a new concept in apple trees that’s starting to take off: trees that produce two different kinds of apples like Honey Crisp and McIntosh. The trees are called Apple Twist, and are grown at a farm in Wisconsin. But you can now find them at places like Leitner’s Garden Center in St. Paul.

Most of us don’t think of winter as a time to get fresh, locally grown apples, but one company is hoping to change that Honeybear, a company that markets fruit grown in Minnesota and Wisconsin, is debuting its newest apple called Pazazz.

MDH: 2 Dead From Listeria In Caramel Apples

The Minnesota Department of Health has a warning about caramel apples linked to a listeria outbreak. Four people in Minnesota got sick in late October and November — and two of them died. Health officials say the commercially-produced apples were purchased from Cub Foods, Kwik Trip and Mike’s Discount Foods.

Hail Devastates Waverly Farms

Severe storms rolled through parts of the state Wednesday morning. The worst weather hit Wright County with damaging winds and large hail. For farmers there, the storm was devastating. Piles of hail up to a foot deep is an incredible sight to a meteorologist, but it’s a sight that farmers in Waverly, Minn. hope to never see, especially at harvest time.

When the apple was first introduced in 1991, University of Minnesota researchers only produced a three-week supply. Now, Honeycrisp is the No. 1 desired apple in America.

Bite Of Minnesota: Homemade Applesauce

Once all those lovely luscious berries are gone, we still have a fruit option to turn to: the apple. A few weeks ago I bought a large bag of Haralson apples from the Minneapolis Farmers Market and promptly made applesauce, apple butter, and an apple pie. The applesauce was divided into wide mouth 8 oz. jars for lunches and while I reserved a cup for baking, that was quickly eaten for lunch, too.

Local Apple Orchard Suffers 90% Crop Loss

The apple season is underway in Minnesota. Some of the favorites, like sweetango or honeycrips, are ready for the picking at local orchards. But you may have noticed the harvest is a couple of weeks behind schedule. And Craig Schaper of Minnetonka Orchards says the search to find fruit without any flaws is a difficult task. “It’s devastating. I mean, this is what you pray for not to happen,” Schaper said. “You know, this is first time in 36 years that we’ve really been hit hard.”
