Boat Crash Kills Northern Minn. Man, Injures 2 Others

A 23-year-old northern Minnesota man died after a boat he was riding in crashed into a rock Friday night on Lake Shagawa. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said the crash wasn’t reported until early Saturday morning, when someone on one of the lake’s islands called in.

Opposing Sides Converge At Iron Range Copper Mine Meeting

About 1,500 people turned out Thursday night to weigh in on what Minnesota’s first copper mine could mean for their water and air. The DNR has spent the last five years studying what PolyMet’s proposal could mean for the environment on the Iron Range. A crowd packed the convention center in Duluth. The building, which is usually home to concerts and hockey games, turned into the place Barb Crow came to join a polarizing debate.

Woman, 54, Found Dead In Northern Minn. Driveway

Sheriff’s deputies in northeastern Minnesota are investigating after finding a 54-year-old woman early Tuesday morning lying dead in a driveway. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says officers found Julie Janiel, of Embarrass, shortly after 1:30 a.m. on the 4700 block of Waisanen Road. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Suspect In Custody After Babbitt Suspicious Death

Police in northeastern Minnesota say a suspect is in custody after a man died Monday after being found unconscious on a road near the suspect’s home. The Babbitt Police Department announced Tuesday that 24-year-old Shawn Russel Doherty was in Virginia Jail, booked for 2nd degree intentional homicide.

Man Arrested In Connection To N. Minn. Homicide

Authorities in northern Minnesota have a suspect in custody after a 55-year-old man was murdered on Monday. According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s office, the Babbitt Police Department responded to a medical emergency call just after 11 a.m. and found Paul John Bulen lying injured on a road. Bulen was brought to an Ely hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police arrested 24-year-old Shawn Russel Doherty, who is currently being held in the St. Louis County Jail

Ex-Minn. Fire Chief Pleads Guilty In Forest Fires

A former fire chief in northeastern Minnesota has pleaded guilty to setting fires on U.S. forest land. Former Babbitt Fire Chief Ryan Scharber pleaded guilty Friday to one count of setting fires on U.S. forest land. The 30-year-old also pleaded guilty to attempted arson on property used in interstate or foreign commerce.

2 Injured After Motorcycle, Minivan Collide In St. Louis Co.

Two people are being treated with non-life-threatening injuries after the motorcycle they were riding on collided with a minivan Saturday near Babbitt, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s office. At 1:15 p.m., 67-year-old Susan Fetterer of Plymouth attempted to turn on to northbound Highway 21 and collided with a motorcycle. Thirty-five-year-old Dewi Webb, the motorcycle driver, and 36-year-old passenger Tiffany Webb were ejected from the bike on impact.
