High school football is back. There isn’t a much better concept for football fans than watching their favorite prep teams under the lights on Friday nights. Except this week, it all starts on Saturday night. Here are four of this week’s top match-ups, with a couple other quality games on the side.

Prep Blog: Previewing Last Year’s 4A State Football Field

We’ve previewed the 2014 state tournament teams from Class 6A and Class 5A. This week, it’s Class 4A’s turn and it’s a group led by defending state champion Becker. The Bulldogs were somewhat of a surprise to win the Prep Bowl last year after Hutchinson had won state championships the two years prior.

Becker Car Accident Claims Life Of 10-Year-Old Girl Weeks Later

The family of 10-year-old Cassy Maurer says she no longer has any brain activity, and they’re preparing to donate her organs. Cassy’s father, Chuck Maurer, died the night of the crash.

Teen Runs Red Light, Killing Father Of 3 In Becker

A teenager running a red light is blamed for a deadly crash Tuesday night on Highway 10 in Sherburne County. Chuck Maurer, 54, was killed and seven others hurt when a pickup carrying four teens blew through the stoplight at about 8 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 11.

1 Killed, 7 Hurt In 2-Vehicle Crash In Sherburne County

A 54-year-old man was killed and two others seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash in Sherburne County Tuesday evening. According to the State Patrol, the crash happened at about 8 p.m. in Becker, Minnesota.

Roseville Tops White Bear Lake 21-14

Becker Beats DeLaSalle 24-6 For Class 4A Title

C.J. Schwintek ran for 146 yards and a touchdown as Becker beat DeLaSalle 24-6 Friday in the Prep Bowl to win the Class 4A state football championship. Dawson Brown had three interceptions for Becker (12-1), which won its second school title.

Bright Minds Battle Their ‘Bots At Minnesota State Fair

The brightest minds at the State Fair on Friday could be found in the back corner of the Education Building showing off their 100-pound made-from-scratch robots. Precocious ingenuity collided with full-on nerdery at the High School Robotics Competition as the science class savants from Mahtomedi, Becker and Fergus Falls showed off what six weeks of electrical engineering, innovative 3-D printers and zealous ambition can spawn.

Xcel Energy Plans To Keep Burning Coal At Sherco

Xcel Energy says it plans to keep burning coal in the two oldest units at its Sherburne County power plant in Becker in central Minnesota. In a report to regulators, Xcel says sticking with coal is the smartest course, rather than switching to natural gas, at least until the future of environmental regulations becomes clearer.
