This delectable, aromatic pressed sandwich originated in Milan. Like its Italian and Italian-American predecessors, the pizza and the sub sandwich, the panini quickly became an American staple. In Italy, the panini was associated with youth oriented pop culture. Then the Mediterranean artisan sandwich became popular in American fast food chains and sandwich shops. Different cultures have adopted the panini as their own. Served up in many ethnic variations, such as the Cubano, the panini is a dinner and diner favorite. Around metro Twin Cities, epicureans are sampling some of the best at chic panini bistros and restaurants.
