It’s been five years since a rural Staples man disappeared, and authorities still don’t know what happened to him. Eighty-two-year-old Peter Achermann left his home to run errands on July 24, 2009. He was last seen on Warner Road by the Crow Wing River Bridge between noon and 1 p.m.
Authorities in northern Minnesota arrested a juvenile Wednesday for suspicion of arson in connection to a wild fire that burned more than 70 acres.
About 50 train cars carrying coal derailed in Cass County. According to a Cass County Sheriff’s Office news release, deputies received word about the derailment west of Pillager at about 11:50 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities said alcohol appears to have been a factor in a rollover crash early Monday morning that left one dead and two others hurt. The Minnesota State Patrol responded to a one-vehicle crash at about 2 a.m. Monday on Highway 200 south of LaPorte near Bemidji.
Authorities said a 3-year-old boy is dead as the result of an apparent drowning in a Nisswa Lake Monday night. The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office was called at about 6:25 p.m. Monday on a report of an unresponsive 3-year-old boy who was found in Lake Edna in Nisswa.
One bear is dead after authorities got several reports of a nuisance bear Thursday morning in Longville, Minn. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said upon its arrival at the scene, one bear had been killed and two more bears were in a tree.
The tragedy and terror from the Newtown massacre was felt some 1,500 miles away by Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch. “After the incident at Sandy Hook, it really brought a new light to, you know, that this could come home really easily,” Burch said.
Authorities are looking for at least one suspect after two men were stabbed in Cass Lake early Saturday morning. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to a report of a disturbance in Cass Lake, which is east of Bemidji, at about 3:18 a.m. Saturday.
Authorities say one person was hospitalized and another was taken into custody after a head-on crash caused injuries in Cass County Monday night.
A 43-year-old Minneapolis man and a 53-year-old Princeton man died over the weekend in apparent drownings on a northern Minnesota lake, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
Richard Floyd Roubal, 25, of Pine River was sentenced on two separate charges of third-degree burglary and one charge of felony receiving stolen property for offenses that occurred during summer and fall of 2011 in the Pine River, Minn., area.
Authorities have identified the 66-year-old Motley man who died early Wednesday morning in an ATV crash.
