Two people had to be pulled from a pick-up truck on Leech Lake Friday after it broke through thin ice. According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a call around 7:49 a.m. Friday of a vehicle partially through the ice on Leech Lake.
Upon arrival, officers and the Walker Fire Department found two people in the bed of the truck, uninjured but unable to get out safely.
Sheriff Tom Burch said the fire department was able to successfully rescue the two from the truck,
They were not injured.
Officers are urging people to practice caution on the ice as, despite the previous week’s cold temperatures, the ice is not safe everywhere. They urge people to check the thickness first before going out, and remind people that ice should never be considered 100 percent safe.
The two victims who died in a mobile home fire in Northern Minnesota Saturday have been identified as April Saunders, 23, and her brother Markus Saunders, 21, both of Cohasset, Minnesota.

Cass County Attorney Christopher Strandlie says 29-year-old Dane Riley of Pine River got the maximum sentence under state law Thursday. Three men have been arrested and are believed to be connected to a series of burglaries in Beltrami and Cass Counties. According to the county sheriff’s office, 29-year-old Joshua James Martin, 25-year-old Jeremy Jay Martin, and 19-year-old Jasmine Lee Bellcourt were taken into custody over the weekend.
The owner of a northern Minnesota breeding operation where more than 100 dogs were seized this summer has pleaded guilty to one count. The Cass County prosecutor’s office says 60-year-old Deborah Rowell of Pine River pleaded guilty to failing to provide dogs with adequate shade. Rowell had been charged with nine violations, ranging from animal neglect to depriving animals of shelter, shade and water. Her trial was scheduled to begin Monday.
