The Champlin Park boys basketball team had a chance to cap off a perfect season with a state championship lat weekend, but Apple Valley and its sense of unfinished business coming in was too much for the Rebels.
Brock Bertram finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Tre Jones scored 12 more to help Apple Valley hold off Champlin Park 64-61 and claim its second 4A boys state championship in the last three years on Saturday night.

The best high school basketball team in the state so far has been Champlin Park. The Rebels are unbeaten, and they’re motivated by what they did not do a year ago. Osseo took Champlin Park out in the section finals to go to state in 2014.
It’s getting to be that exciting time of the winter high school sports season as we go down to the wire for conference champions and get the postseason started.
This weekend, there are plenty of great match-ups in hockey and basketball. One of the top events of the weekend is the Timberwolves Shootout, an all-day event at Target Center where some of Minnesota’s top teams face talented squads from across the country.
It’s another huge week for high school football, and our Game of the Week features a pair of undefeated teams that are ranked in the top 10 in Class 6A as Totino-Grace heads to Maple Grove in a Northwest Suburban Conference showdown.
Many students across Minnesota woke up Friday morning to find out they had yet another day off from school. Champlin Park junior Andrei Gill spent more time than he wanted scraping the ice from his windshield. “Just wow. Couldn’t even open my car door to get in,” Gill said.

As hard as it is to believe, we are now at the midway point of the season. It’s that time of the year where a team’s identity is established, it’s a matter of executing the game plan and knowing what the team across from you will do.
Judy Blomgren is WCCO’s first Excellent Educator of the week. Called “Mama B” by students, Blomgren teaches all orchestra classes at Champlin Park High School.
Last week, we started a slew of conference previews with the South Suburban Conference where it was predicted last year’s state runner-up to be the favorite. This week, we head just a little north and west of the Twin Cities metro to take a look at the Northwest Suburban Conference.
