Steel Dynamics Idles 2 Iron Range Operations, Cuts 200 Jobs

More layoffs were announced Tuesday on northern Minnesota’s Iron Range, this time at Mesabi Nugget in Hoyt Lakes and Mining Resources in Chisholm. Their Fort Wayne, Indiana-based parent company, Steel Dynamics Inc., said in a statement that the operations are being idled effective immediately, meaning the loss of about 200 positions for at least two years.

DFL Senator Clears One Conflict Hurdle In New Job

Minnesota’s campaign finance watchdog says a Democratic senator’s new job heading a lobbying group doesn’t necessarily conflict with his role as a lawmaker. The Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board said in a draft advisory opinion released Tuesday that Sen. David Tomassoni may face a conflict of interest on specific votes or actions.

Minnesota Officials Open $28M Wastewater Plant

Officials in northeastern Minnesota are celebrating the opening of a $28 million wastewater treatment plant. The Central Iron Range Sanitary Sewer District held a ribbon cutting and open house Wednesday to commemorate the new facility serving Chisholm, Buhl, Kinney and Great Scott Township.

Chisholm Man Stabbed During Argument Over ‘Past Relationship’

A 39-year-old Chisholm, Minn. man was hospitalized after being stabbed early Saturday morning. The incident happened at a residence in Luna Lake, which is 20 miles north of Hibbing, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.

Longtime Minn. Congressman Jim Oberstar Dies At 79

Former U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar, who represented northeastern Minnesota for 36 years, died unexpectedly early Saturday morning. He was 79. A statement released by his family said Oberstar died in his sleep. A cause of death was not provided. His former chief of staff, Bill Richard, said Oberstar died at his home in Potomac, Maryland.

Delta Air Seeks $5.9M Loan To Renovate Call Center

Delta Air Lines wants a $5.9 million forgivable government loan to refurbish a call center in northern Minnesota that was mostly built with government money in the first place. Delta’s loan application says the call center in Chisholm employs 418 people. It says the renovation would add 107 more.

A 26-year-old Michigan man, formerly of Chisholm, pleaded guilty to defrauding customers of his custom car shop out of more than $1 million. Edwin Scott Verdung pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud, and one count of transaction money laundering while working at Memory Lane Classics.
