By Adam Hoge- MOBILE, Ala. (CBS) — My time at the Senior Bowl is up, but after seeing four practices and having nearly 48 hours to talk to scouts, agents and team representatives, there are […]
Senior Bowl veterans will tell you that Day 2 is always cleaner than Day 1. The reality of college all-star games is that players are working with unfamiliar teammates under the direction of unfamiliar coaches who are using unfamiliar terminology. It’s not like the priority is scheming to win Saturday’s game, but there’s enough of a learning curve that players need a couple days to get comfortable, especially on the offensive side of the ball. As that happens, the best players tend to separate themselves from the rest and that started to occur Tuesday. Here’s a look at who stood out in Day 2 and who struggled.
The Senior Bowl gets referred to as a college all-star game, but it’s much more than an all-star game. In fact, that label is pretty inaccurate. While the game features many of the top players in college football, it only hosts seniors, and many of the very best seniors opt not to play in the game.
By Adam Hoge MOBILE, Ala. (CBS) —The two Senior Bowl practices Monday had a very different feel, and not just because the weather changed. The South team practiced in the early afternoon with the sun […]
With the BCS’s 15-year rule atop college football about to close, let’s take a look back at the 10 worst head coach hires of the era – and see if we can learn anything from these disasters.
Southern Illinois defensive coordinator Kyle “Bubba” Schweigert has been named new head football coach at the University of North Dakota. Schweigert is returning to Grand Forks after a decade away from the program. He was the defensive coordinator that helped UND win the 2001 NCAA Division II national title.
Each bowl game will carry a different storyline with its game, which helps to make each game unique. Colorado State has already served up one of the more unbelievable endings we will be sure to see this bowl season, with a wild rally against Washington State in the New Mexico Bowl. If that was a preview of things to come this bowl season, hang on tight!
College Football Spotlight: Texas And Army Coaching Searches On Different Levels With Same Goal, Restore Pride
Army will never be a dominant force in college football the way Texas can be, but both programs have a special place in college football’s history. Seeing them each reach their expectations is capable if the right coach is brought in.
The Heisman Trophy will be presented Saturday evening in New York City. Winston’s name should be at the top of the list as college football’s most impressive player from the start of the season through the championship games. Everything else after that is purely a guess.
Are the two best teams in the country right now scheduled to collide in Pasadena, California? It would be difficult to prove otherwise.
Few quarterbacks in college football have put up the kind of passing numbers Fresno State’s Derek Carr has this season. Carr has passed for a nation-leading 4,462 yards and 45 touchdowns while being picked off just five times all year.
If Ohio State gets by the defensive juggernaut of Michigan State in Indianapolis, the Buckeyes absolutely deserve to head to the final BCS Championship Game of the BCS era regardless of what happens at the SEC Championship in Atlanta.
Jeremy Langford ran for 134 yards and a touchdown, and No. 11 Michigan State wrapped up an unbeaten regular season in Big Ten play with a 14-3 victory over Minnesota on Saturday. The Spartans (11-1, 8-0) finished a perfect Big Ten regular season for only the third time.
With the competition wide open for the Heisman Trophy, Boston College running back Andre Williams has become a bit of a rising contender.
The Michigan State-Ohio State matchup in the Big Ten championship game already is set, and the Buckeyes are two-touchdown favorites against rival Michigan on Saturday. The real drama in the Big Ten this week might be in the three trophy games — Iowa at Nebraska, Northwestern at Illinois and Purdue at Indiana.
It is fitting that the Iron Bowl finally gets to play this kind of role in the SEC, and it is a shock it has not happened like this before. Since the addition of a conference championship game in the SEC in 1992, Alabama and Auburn have never been quite this good in the same season.
James White rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown and No. 16 Wisconsin beat Minnesota for the 10th straight time in a 20-7 victory on Saturday. Jared Abbrederis had seven catches for 67 yards and a touchdown and Chris Borland recovered two fumbles and forced one to tie the NCAA record for career fumbles caused. After the game, the Badgers (9-2, 6-1 Big Ten) hoisted Paul Bunyan’s Axe and used it to chop the Gophers goal post when the time ran out.
If Kellen Moore and Colt Brennan could do it, then why not Northern Illinois Jordan Lynch? Lynch received three first-place votes for the Heisman Trophy in 2012, so he is certainly on the radar for some voters out there.
The easy question is to ask if Ohio State is better than Baylor, but the real question should ask if Michigan State is better than Oklahoma State. That is the most important question over the next few weeks, but it will not matter if Alabama and Florida State run the table to collide in Pasadena.
Tailgate Fan correspondents Nick Stevens and Jerry Miller roam the entire countryside searching for the wildest and most epic tailgates in all of football.
Baylor’s Bryce Petty is probably on the outside looking in on the Heisman Trophy, but a trip to New York for the ceremony is well within reach.
It feels weird to suggest that an undefeated Ohio State team could have absolutely no shot to play in the national championship game, but that is the reality staring down at the Buckeyes right now following the release of the latest BCS standings Sunday night.
By now, we have taken a glance at some of the SEC’s Heisman hopefuls like Manziel, McCarron and Murray. But what about the league’s second highest-rated passer, LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger?
This is the week college football fans have had circled on the calendar for quite some time. This is the week that will begin to truly shape the BCS Championship picture. This is the week we have been waiting for.
If there is one quarterback in the country you might want leading your offense down field with the game on the line, it may be Alabama’s AJ McCarron.
