It may not be a huge surprise, but the news is certainly sad to many. The Twin Cities’ oldest independent bookstore — The Bookcase in Wayzata — closes for good on Oct. 18. Bob Stacke is a store regular and has been for years. He found out the bad news Tuesday on a shopping trip.

State Agencies Sever Ties With Mpls. Non-Profit

A non-profit, accused of using grant money to fund lavish trips and a Costco membership, was shut down by the state on Friday. The state is seeking $600,000 back from Community Action of Minneapolis. The agency helps low-income families with heating bills and works to find people jobs.

Recall On Some Fruit Sold At Costco, Trader Joe’s, Sam’s

A Central California company has issued a voluntary nationwide recall of specific lots of its fresh peaches, plums, nectarines and pluots over concerns of possible listeria contamination. Wawona Packing says on its website that no illnesses have been reported and the recall is a precautionary measure.

The owners of a Minnesota pizza franchise are making an unusual business move this holiday season — raising the pay for all their minimum wage workers to $10 an hour. The move at Punch Pizza comes as debate is sharpening over whether to raise Minnesota’s minimum wage statewide.

Punch Pizza Raises Minimum Wage To $10 Per Hour

The same week thousands of workers protested across the nation to raise the federal minimum wage, one Minnesota company decided to do something about it. John Puckett, co-owner of Punch Neapolitan Pizza, says all eight of their Twin Cities’ locations now have minimum wage set at $10 an hour. “My business partner and I decided to invest in our people because we are growing our company in the Twin Cities,” Puckett said. “We really believe to have the best quality product and service, it’s the right thing to do.” Minnesota’s minimum wage is $7.25. Puckett hopes the pay will keep good workers and attract valuable employees to their company.

His plan was to fortify his retirement plan by stealing and selling $1 million of hearing aids from his previous employer, but a Bloomington man is now heading to court instead.
