As DeAndre Mathieu performs, so go the Minnesota Golden Gophers. That’s a lot of responsibility to fall on a player with such small shoulders, but there’s no one on the roster more likely to be unfazed by pressure than the speedy, elusive, fearless Mathieu.
The Big Ten Conference handed out its season honors on Monday with the league’s postseason tournament a few days away, and a pair of Gophers were recognized. Junior guards Andre Hollins and DeAndre Mathieu were both named to the All-Big Ten Honorable Mention team.
Austin Hollins had 14 points and three steals in his last scheduled home game, a fitting senior spark for Minnesota in an 81-63 victory over Penn State on Sunday to set up a rematch between these teams in the first round of the Big Ten tournament.
Sam Thompson scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half, leading No. 24 Ohio State back from a 12-point deficit to a 64-46 victory over Minnesota on Saturday night. The Buckeyes outscored the Golden Gophers 46-18 in the second half. Lenzelle Smith Jr. added 13 points and Shannon Scott 10 for the Buckeyes (22-6, 9-6 Big Ten), who trailed by 10 at the half and by 12 early in the second half before taking control with a 17-0 run.
DeAndre Mathieu scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half and Minnesota came back to defeat cold-shooting Northwestern 54-48 on Sunday.
DeAndre Mathieu had 10 of his 16 points in the second half, helping Minnesota overtake Indiana for a 66-60 victory on Saturday night to end a three-game losing streak. Maurice Walker pitched in 14 points and eight rebounds, and Andre Hollins added 10 points for the Gophers (16-8, 5-6 Big Ten), who lost to Nebraska, Northwestern and Purdue over the last two weeks by a total of eight points. This time, they came through in the closing minutes.
The Gophers (15-7, 4-5) had the ball at the end, but DeAndre Mathieu’s layup was short and Mo Walker’s putback was off, too, before the final buzzer went off. Walker scored 14 points and Austin Hollins had 13 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Things couldn’t have started any worse for Minnesota. Andre Hollins hurt his left ankle just 16 seconds into the game and didn’t return.
Elliott Eliason had 12 points and 13 rebounds to help Minnesota muscle past 11th-ranked Ohio State for a 63-53 victory Thursday night that stuck the Buckeyes with their third straight loss.
Keith Appling scored 24 points to help No. 5 Michigan State beat Minnesota 87-75 in overtime Saturday after overcoming a double-digit deficit in the second half and blowing a lead late in regulation. The Spartans (15-1, 4-0 Big Ten) scored 15 straight points while holding the Golden Gophers (13-4, 2-2) scoreless for nearly 8 minutes after trailing 53-43 with 15:57 left. Michigan State missed an opportunity to win in regulation for the second straight game, losing a five-point lead in the last 13 seconds.
DeAndre Mathieu scored 16 points and Andre Hollins added 14 as Minnesota overcame a late six-point deficit to defeat Penn State 68-65 Wednesday. Four late free throw conversions by Malik Smith in the final 30 seconds and one by Elliott Eliason with 33 seconds, enabled the Gophers (13-3, 2-1 Big Ten) to hang on after taking its first lead of the second half with 1:43 remaining.
The Gopher basketball team opens the Big 10 Thursday against Michigan. One of the bright spots thus far has been point guard Deandre Mathieu. He came with Coach Richard Pitino from Florida International University. So far, he’s been better than most expected.
DeAndre Mathieu scored 27 points to lead five Gophers in double figures as Minnesota defeated Nebraska-Omaha 92-79 on Friday night.
Austin Hollins scored 20 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds as Minnesota pulled away from South Dakota State for a 75-59 victory Tuesday night.
Andre Hollins scored 21 points and Austin Hollins added 16 as the Gophers beat Florida State 71-61 Tuesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Williams Rena. Minnesota improved to 7-2 under new coach Richard Pitino.
