Keith Appling scored 24 points to help No. 5 Michigan State beat Minnesota 87-75 in overtime Saturday after overcoming a double-digit deficit in the second half and blowing a lead late in regulation. The Spartans (15-1, 4-0 Big Ten) scored 15 straight points while holding the Golden Gophers (13-4, 2-2) scoreless for nearly 8 minutes after trailing 53-43 with 15:57 left. Michigan State missed an opportunity to win in regulation for the second straight game, losing a five-point lead in the last 13 seconds.

Minnesota Storms Back To Beat Penn St. 68-65

DeAndre Mathieu scored 16 points and Andre Hollins added 14 as Minnesota overcame a late six-point deficit to defeat Penn State 68-65 Wednesday. Four late free throw conversions by Malik Smith in the final 30 seconds and one by Elliott Eliason with 33 seconds, enabled the Gophers (13-3, 2-1 Big Ten) to hang on after taking its first lead of the second half with 1:43 remaining.

The Gopher basketball team opens the Big 10 Thursday against Michigan. One of the bright spots thus far has been point guard Deandre Mathieu. He came with Coach Richard Pitino from Florida International University. So far, he’s been better than most expected.

DeAndre Mathieu scored 17 points and Minnesota came back in the second half to beat Chaminade 83-68 at the Maui Invitational on Wednesday. The Golden Gophers turned around a 9-point deficit in the second half by forcing the Division II school into bad shots and five turnovers over the final 10 minutes.

Gophers Announce Signing Of Guard Malik Smith

Guard Malik Smith has signed his tender to transfer from Florida International to Minnesota. Minnesota announced the completion of the transfer on Monday. Smith is following coach Richard Pitino to the Golden Gophers. He averaged 14.1 points per game as a junior starter for FIU last season.
