Sometimes a team’s best players don’t make the All-Star team. Here are the American League’s mid-season team MVPs.
Facial hair seems almost mandatory in Major League Baseball, and the American League Central has some of the best.
Despite falling a single short of hitting for the cycle in front of his childhood idol, Eugenio Suarez still had a memorable game. Playing in just his eighth career game, Suarez had a double, triple, homer, two RBIs and scored three runs in Detroit’s 12-9 victory Saturday. He grounded into a force out in the eighth inning, ending his bid for the cycle.
Eduardo Nunez hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning and the Minnesota Twins rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.
Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was ejected from Sunday’s game against the Detroit Tigers for arguing a call near second base.
Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run homer that capped a six-run second inning, sending Max Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers past the Minnesota Twins 9-3 Saturday. On a day when the Tigers honored former manager Jim Leyland, they won with a familiar formula they used to reach the playoffs under him: Power by Cabrera, the two-time AL MVP, and pitching by Scherzer, the reigning Cy Young Award winner.
“I probably would have never made it through college without baseball, so I’m thankful for that. I really am proud that I got to play on that level.”
Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander isn’t thrilled that he got Sunday off, but he had no choice. Verlander was scheduled to start for the Tigers against Minnesota before the game was postponed because of heavy rain. No makeup date has been announced.
The Minnesota Twins aren’t picky about how they get on base this season. And if the most-walked team in the majors can get more starting pitching performances as they did Saturday, the Twins likely won’t mind their status as a middle-of-the-pack team when it comes to batting average.
Drew Smyly, a strong setup man in the Tigers’ bullpen, moves back into the starting rotation.
Josmil Pinto hit an RBI single in the 11th inning and the Minnesota Twins overcame 12 strikeouts by Justin Verlander to beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 on Monday night. The Tigers led 3-0 in the eighth, but Jose Veras gave up RBI doubles to Eduardo Escobar and Ryan Doumit. Brian Dozier led off the ninth with a tying homer against previously perfect closer Joaquin Benoit. Dozier opened the 11th with a single off Luke Putkonen (1-2) and advanced on a wild pitch. Pinto punched a single to right field to give manager Ron Gardenhire his 998th career victory.
Chris Herrmann’s second RBI double of the game broke an eighth-inning tie and helped the Minnesota Twins to a 7-6 win over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. With two out, Herrmann lined a ball into the right-center field gap. Center fielder Austin Jackson got a bad break on the ball, and just missed while attempting a shoestring catch. Doug Bernier scored from second to give the Twins the lead.
Torii Hunter hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the seventh inning and scored from second base on a passed ball to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 7-1 on Wednesday night. Drew Smyly (5-0) struck out two in a perfect inning in relief of Anibal Sanchez.
Justin Morneau had a season high four hits, including a two-run homer and a two-run double, and Glen Perkins struck out Miguel Cabrera with two on for the final out to help the Minnesota Twins hold off the Detroit Tigers in a 6-3 win Tuesday night.
Doug Fister held Minnesota hitless until the sixth inning and Torii Hunter connected for his 300th career home run, leading the Detroit Tigers over the Twins 5-2 Sunday.
