Jim Kowalski died Thursday in a plane accident while fishing in Canada, according to family member Deb Kowalski. Deb Kowalski said Jim suffered a head injury in the incident, and an autopsy is being performed. She said he was with a friend on the trip. Jim Kowalski, 67, founded Kowalski’s Markets back in 1986 in White Bear Lake.
An overnight shooting in Brooklyn Park left one man dead. Both Brooklyn Park police and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call at the 6200 block of Winnetka Avenue at 2 a.m. Saturday.
A 5-year-old boy has died after falling out of the bucket of a skid loader, and then getting crushed by the machine, authorities said. The Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office got a call at 6:29 p.m. on Thursday that a boy had been injured in a skid loader accident at his residence on Sunset Trail in Cannon Falls Township.
Authorities said they’re looking for an outside agency to launch an investigation into the death last month of a Park Health and Rehab patient. The city of St. Louis Park said police responded to a report of a Park Health and Rehab patient behaving erratically while in possession of a knife and scissors on July 14.
A pedestrian was hit and killed Tuesday afternoon on the 5500 block of Lexington Avenue in Shoreview, Minn., according to authorities. The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office said officers arrived on the scene at 12:55 p.m. Tuesday after a vehicle driving northbound on Lexington Avenue, north of County Road I, collided with an adult male.
Police are looking into the death of a man in Brooklyn Park after he was found in a hot tub. Officers were called to the home in the 7700 block of Arlington Avenue North around 7 a.m. Sunday. The 57-year-old man who lived there was pronounced dead.
Police were called to the scene of a shooting in St. Paul Park at 1:45 a.m. Saturday. Once there, authorities found a man dead from a gun shot at the house on Fifth Street near Pullman. At this time, there’s no information about a suspect.
A woman was found dead alongside the road in Otsego early Saturday morning, but authorities aren’t suspecting foul play. Wright County Deputies responded to a report of an unconscious woman on the shoulder of Parrish Ave NE at the intersection of 93rd Circle NE at 12:35 a.m. Saturday. A woman had fallen from a moving vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A jogger in Wright County was killed Thursday afternoon after a van crossed the center line, killing the pedestrian, according to the Wright County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said the incident took place at 12:09 p.m. on the 8300 block of Wright County Road 19 in Otsego, Minn.

A St. Paul man was sentenced Wednesday for his role in a “car surfing” accident in August 2012 that killed 21-year-old Shawn Swanson, also of St. Paul. Cole T. Fohrenkamm, 22, was sentenced for reckless driving and will serve three years of probation, 30 days in jail and will complete 300 hours of community service after the incident that took place last year near Oakland, Wis. One-quarter of Fohrenkamm’s community service has to involve educating others about the dangers of drinking and alcohol.
Sheriff’s officials have released the name of a 14-year-old boy who died in a swimming accident in Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota. St. Louis County authorities say Briggs Anderson of Fergus Falls was with a church group touring Rainy Lake by houseboat when the accident happened Monday evening.
The woman killed by a falling tree in Eden Prairie Saturday evening has been identified. According to her 18-year-old daughter Lindsay, 56-year-old Nina Mackay had a passion for her two children, love for her dogs and a strong affinity for Post-It Notes. “You look up on the counter and you just see like this, this, this…they’re everywhere,” Lindsay said. “Every time I woke up, there’d be a note next to my bed.”
The 24-year-old motorcyclist that died Thursday afternoon in northeastern Minnesota has been identified as Benjamin Scott Jones, authorities say. According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, Jones, a Rice Lake Township resident, was traveling north on Rice Lake Road on his motorcycle when he attempted to pass an SUV, also traveling northbound, as it made a left turn.
A 24-year-old woman who was hit by a vehicle while she was riding her bicycle has died — and police are still looking for the driver who sped from the scene. Minneapolis police say the woman was riding at the intersection of 28th and Pleasant Avenue South on Wednesday night when a vehicle sped through a stop sign, with its headlights off, and hit her.
