A new Amtrak study says adding a second round-trip between St. Paul and Chicago could prove to be popular. The Minnesota and Wisconsin departments of transportation as well as La Crosse County in Wisconsin asked Amtrak to conduct the study.
The tracks at Union Depot in downtown St. Paul have been quiet for 43 years, so it’s big news that Amtrak is resuming passenger service again.
Step into the grand old neoclassical building in St. Paul’s Lowertown and you’re immediately taken back to a time when coal-puffing locomotives carried passengers from the Twin Cities to points far and wide.
Amtrak plans to restore its full route between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest next week.
