Thirteen people have been treated after inhaling gas at a hotel in northern Iowa. Mason City firefighters were sent to a Holiday Inn Express a little before 11:45 a.m. Sunday.

A St. Paul community school was evacuated Friday morning after a hallowed-out grenade was found in a student’s backpack, according to district officials. Police were called to Heights Community School on the city’s east side just after 11 a.m. Heights is part of the St. Paul Public School district, and serves students from prekindergarten through fifth grade.

The illness that made 30 Springfield Public school students sick enough to go to the hospital Thursday was not caused by carbon monoxide, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. A group of fourth and fifth graders became sick while rehearsing for a choir concert. Bethany Mattson says she was never really worried about her fifth-grade daughter, who was rehearsing with her classmates Thursday morning in the school’s auditorium. An 18 year old is in the Carlton County Jail after being arrested for writing a bomb threat that led to the evacuation of Esko School on Tuesday. According to the Carlton County Sheriff’s office, Eddie Michael Edwards is suspected of leaving a written threat that was found around noon on Tuesday in the K-12 school. The building was evacuated, and everyone moved to a nearby church while bomb detection dogs were dispatched. The FBI was also involved in the situation.
A possible gas leak led to the evacuation of Maple Grove High School on Thursday afternoon. Barbara Olson, the director of school and community relations for Osseo Area Schools, says her office was alerted about 1 p.m. that a gas-like odor caused a precautionary evacuation of the school. Maple Grove High lets out a 2 p.m., so students who walked or drove were released early.
Authorities are evacuating part of a North Dakota town near the scene of a fiery oil train derailment. Cass County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tara Morris says as many as 300 Casselton residents may be evacuated. Morris says there’s no immediate danger. It’s a precaution in case winds change as some derailed cars continue to burn. Investigators couldn’t get close to the blaze and estimates of how many cars caught fire varied.

A Kmart in Grand Rapids was evacuated Saturday afternoon after a bomb threat, according to police. At 2:10 p.m., Grand Rapids Police responded to a reported bomb threat at the Kmart at 1111 Pokegama Ave. S. after employees received a call from someone claiming to have left a bomb somewhere in the store. Police closed, evacuated and thoroughly searched the store. Employees and customers were eventually allowed re-entry.
The Minnesota State Fair Grandstand was evacuated Saturday night because of weather concerns. According to State Fair spokeswoman Brianna Schulte, the Macklemore and Ryan Lewis concert will be postponed until 9:15 p.m. Concert goers were temporarily evacuated as a safety precaution.
