FBI Investigating Deephaven Welfare Fraud Duo

The FBI is now investigating more claims against the self-declared “Scottish aristocrats” charged with welfare fraud – including the possibility they also defrauded members of a prominent Twin Cities church. The FBI has interviewed members of St. Martin’s by-the-Lake Episcopal Church who say that Colin and Andrea Chisholm borrowed thousands of dollars from them, and offered worthless stock certificates as collateral.

FBI Investigates Suspected Serial Child Molester

The FBI is asking for help to identify at least 90 victims of a suspected serial child predator who worked in American schools worldwide for four decades. The suspect, 64-year-old William James Vahey, killed himself in Luverne, Minn., on March 21.

FBI, Brooklyn Park Police Search For Bank Robber

The FBI and Brooklyn Park Police are looking for a man who robbed a U.S. Bank by gunpoint Thursday afternoon. Police say a man with a black handgun walked into the bank located on 7600 Broadway Ave. at 1:30 p.m. and ordered everyone to get on the ground. He left with an undisclosed amount of cash and fled westbound on 76th Avenue in a gray or silver GMC Yukon or Cadillac Escalade.

White Earth Man Sentenced For Domestic Assault, Possession Of Short-barreled Shotgun

A White Earth man was sentenced Thursday for assaulting a woman and possessing a short-barreled shotgun at the time of his arrest. Michael James Deegan, 24, was sentenced to 92 months and 60 months to be served concurrently for one count of possession of an unregistered firearm and one count of assault resulting in substantial bodily injury.

North Dakota University System officials say they are working with the FBI and an independent cyber security group to investigate a breach on the system’s computer server. Officials say the personal information of more than 290,000 current and former students and nearly 800 faculty and staff was hacked in early February. It’s not known if the data, which included social security numbers, was stolen.

Teen Crisis Line Back After Being Jammed By Scammer

A local teen crisis center is feeling some relief after a crisis of their own. The hotline for suicidal and abused teens run by The Bridge for Youth was restored late Wednesday after being blocked off for a day after someone took it over, possibly leaving teens in danger. A cyber security expert says it’s likely the perpetrator used a computer program to create an onslaught of calls to jam up the hotline.

18-Year-Old Arrested For Esko School Bomb Threat

An 18 year old is in the Carlton County Jail after being arrested for writing a bomb threat that led to the evacuation of Esko School on Tuesday. According to the Carlton County Sheriff’s office, Eddie Michael Edwards is suspected of leaving a written threat that was found around noon on Tuesday in the K-12 school. The building was evacuated, and everyone moved to a nearby church while bomb detection dogs were dispatched. The FBI was also involved in the situation.

FBI Gives Posthumous Award To Late Sen. Grams

The late Sen. Rod Grams is being recognized for his work in bringing the Amber Alert system to Minnesota. The FBI has posthumously awarded Grams with its FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award. In 2002 Grams was instrumental in making Minnesota the seventh state to implement the Amber Alert system.

Good Question: How Much Does Insurance Fraud Cost Us?

More than 100 former New York City workers – including police officers and firefighters – were charged Tuesday with defrauding the disability system. Some are accused of fishing or doing karate after saying they were too injured or too depressed to work. Prosecutors say the alleged scams cost the federal government about $400 million. Every year, Americans pay $1.1 trillion in private insurance premiums, but a big chunk of that money goes to pay out false insurance claims.

FBI, Mpls. Police Search For Armed Bank Robbers

The FBI and Minneapolis Police are asking for the public’s help in tracking down two armed men who robbed a Minneapolis bank Monday afternoon. According to the FBI, two men entered the Woodlands National Bank at 1113 E. Franklin Ave. at 3:30 p.m. They ordered everyone to lie on the ground, and witnesses say they even physically pushed victims down. They jumped the teller counter and took an undisclosed amount of money.

A Minnesota militia member facing weapons charges in what the FBI once called a “terror plot” is expected to plead guilty. Twenty-five-year-old Buford Braden Rogers was scheduled to go on trial next week on four counts, including charges related to possessing Molotov cocktails. Instead, a change of plea hearing is now set for Friday.

Alleged Bomb-Maker Told FBI He Was Nonviolent

A Minnesota man charged in what the FBI has called a terror plot allegedly told authorities in May that he was not violent, and was using the Internet to investigate “bad” people. Twenty-five-year-old Buford Rogers is scheduled to go on trial next month on four counts, including possessing Molotov cocktails. He’s not charged with terrorism. Rogers made the comments in an FBI interview after he was arrested in May. A redacted transcript was unsealed Friday.

Man Accused Of Taking Army IDs To Stay In Custody

A Minnesota National Guardsman, accused of stealing hundreds of soldiers’ identities, had a target list that included billionaire Warren Buffet. Keith Novak made his first appearance in federal court Monday on a fraud charge related to the identity theft. Novak is charged with one count of fraud in connection with the theft of personal identification information for more than 400 active-duty U.S. soldiers. The FBI revealed that much of the evidence against Novak comes from their taped conversations with him.

There’s nothing strange about seeing someone in a mask on Halloween, unless you’re a bank teller and one of the masked men has a gun. The FBI said three men in masks robbed the TCF Bank in Fridley on Friday night.

3 Men, 1 Armed, Rob Fridley TCF Bank

Three men, one armed with a gun, are still at large after robbing a Fridley bank Thursday evening. According to the FBI’s Minneapolis field office, three men entered the TCF Bank at 52050 Central Ave. NE at 7:00 p.m. All three approached the main counter and demanded money. One man was armed with a handgun. The robbers left with an undisclosed amount of money and fled southbound on Central Avenue. Witnesses believe they were in a gray passenger vehicle. All three men wore black masks. Two were wearing dark clothing, while the third wore a white jumpsuit.

Authorities in Blaine are looking for a woman who is suspected of robbing a bank inside a grocery store on Wednesday and hope a clear surveillance photo can help lead to her arrest. Blaine Police responded to the incident at about 5:25 p.m. at the TCF Bank inside the Cub Foods on the 12000 block of Central Avenue NE.

SEAL Raid Targets Senior Al-Shabab Leader

An early morning raid by Navy SEALs targeted one of the senior leaders of al-Shabab. The strike comes two weeks after al-Shabab militants attacked a mall in Kenya. The Defense Department not yet said if the leader was captured alive. The FBI says more than two dozen young Somali-Americans from the Twin Cities have been lured to terror training camps overseas. Abdi Bihi of the Somali Education and Social Advocacy Center says Saturday’s raid is a good thing for families living in the state.
