Training Never Ends For Firefighters

Rain would be very much appreciated in the western United States where dozens of wildfires are burning. And several crews from Minnesota have been deployed to help. A crew out of Grand Rapids just left for Montana. They are the eighth Minnesota group deployed to help battle the fires.

If you happened to drive past the construction site for the forthcoming U.S. Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis, you may have had cause for alarm. A plume of smoke could be seen late Friday morning at the site.

Prime Wildfire Conditions Lead To Wis. Red Flag Warning

State officials say there is an extremely good chance of wildfires in central Wisconsin. The National Weather Service and the Department of Natural Resources has issued a Red Flag Warning for Saturday for Wood, Adams, Juneau, Monroe and Jackson counties through 7 p.m.

The entire state of Minnesota is under a red flag warning Wednesday. The fire danger is extreme because of warm, windy and dry weather. Gov. Mark Dayton is authorizing the Minnesota National Guard to help fight wildfires.

Dayton Activates Minnesota National Guard To Fight Wildfires

Gov. Mark Dayton is calling on the Minnesota National Guard to fight wildfires across the state. The Guard and the state Department of Public Safety will supply two Blackhawk helicopters with 660-gallon water buckets to combat the blazes. The department says multiple fires were reported in east-central Minnesota Thursday.

Teen Charged With Setting 2 Fires In Walmart To Mask Shoplifting

A Minneapolis woman was charged with two counts of arson after setting two fires inside of a Blaine Walmart store early Monday morning in order to cause a diversion while shoplifting. Rachael Howard Robinson, 19, was charged with one count each of first- and second-degree arson for an incident that took place just before 12:30 a.m. at the Walmart at 11505 Ulysses Street NE, according to the Anoka County Attorney’s office.

The Department of Natural Resources says the wildfire danger has been rising across Minnesota. Precipitation over the last 30 days has been half the normal level over most of the state, so fire managers are urging people to use caution in dry areas.

Fire crews are searching for hotspots by air using heat-sensing equipment above a northwestern Minnesota wildfire. A helicopter is flying low and slow over the Green Valley fire Friday. Crews are using the hand-held sensor to find smoldering fires.

Both Minnesota and Wisconsin are dealing with wildfires and the American Red Cross says it is helping out victims. Multiple wildfires are burning in northwestern Minnesota and the Red Cross is providing staff and supplies to two shelters in Wadena and Hubbard counties.
