In the past two and half weeks, a rash of robberies have plagued three south Minneapolis neighborhoods. There have been 17 robberies total, half of which happened in the early morning hours. The rest occurred after 6 p.m.
On Wednesday, Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau walked the beat on the north side, on Thursday, he biked on the south side. She says there’s been concern in the Lake and Franklin Street areas about an increase in car and bike thefts.
A mudslide in Minneapolis caused evacuations and road closures Thursday evening. Deputy Chief Todd White from the Minneapolis Fire Department says the mudslide was first reported at about 7:15 p.m., and occurred on the West Bank of the University of Minnesota campus.
Commuters taking light-rail trains to and from downtown Minneapolis this weekend will be hopping on a bus for a portion of their trip, according to Metro Transit officials. The Blue Line, formerly called the Hiawatha Line, will undergo scheduled maintenance from Friday at 7:30 p.m. till Monday at 3:30 a.m. between the Target Field and Franklin Avenue stations.
On the cold and snowy landscape of a wintry Saturday afternoon, bicyclists of all ages came to pay their respects. Marcus Nalls, 26, was one of them: a commuter on two wheels who used his bike to get around. Stefan Turner, a bicycle mechanic, had just worked on Nalls’ bike, installing his rack and fenders. “Marcus was one of the … coolest guys we’ve had in our shop in a long time,” Turner said.
An alleged drunk driver who struck and killed a bicyclist Monday night was charged Friday with criminal vehicular homicide. According to the Hennepin County Attorney’s office, John Iverson, 49, faces up to 10 years in prison after killing 26-year-old Marcus Nalls with his van. Witnesses say Iverson sped west down Franklin Avenue Monday night when he suddenly swerved towards the curb, hit Nalls off of his bike and then ran him over. According to the criminal complaint, Iverson continued driving down the block until his van stopped after hitting a dumpster.
Police said a bicyclist was hit and killed in south Minneapolis Monday night, and the driver in the crash may have been drinking. Authorities responded to the crash between a van and a bicyclist at about 9:51 p.m. Monday near the area of Franklin and Garfield Avenues.
A man killed in a Minneapolis shooting Saturday has been identified by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.
An early Saturday morning shooting on Franklin Avenue left one man dead and one in the hospital. Police were called to an area near 21st Avenue South and East Franklin Avenue, and that’s where a fight broke out about two hours before bar close.
Police and bomb squad units are investigating after a bomb threat was called in at a local CVS Pharmacy on Monday. Officials say employees at the CVS Pharmacy at Franklin and Nicollet received phone and email threats about a bomb in the business.
Police in Minneapolis are urging caution and seeking suspects after two women were reportedly raped this week. Authorities said the incidents happened two days apart, on Monday and Wednesday.
