Buildings were evacuated in south Minneapolis Wednesday afternoon after fire officials detected natural gas following a report of a leak. Workers at a grain elevator at 35th Street and Hiawatha Avenue called 911 to report a strong smell of natural gas at about 4:30 p.m., according to a CenterPoint Energy spokesperson. Minneapolis Fire crews did not detect a leak in the grain elevator, but did find a leak on the street nearby.
A possible gas leak led to the evacuation of Maple Grove High School on Thursday afternoon. Barbara Olson, the director of school and community relations for Osseo Area Schools, says her office was alerted about 1 p.m. that a gas-like odor caused a precautionary evacuation of the school. Maple Grove High lets out a 2 p.m., so students who walked or drove were released early.
