The Pitino family still has a chance to win a championship this season. Substitute center Maurice Walker made six free throws in overtime and Minnesota held off Florida State 67-64 Tuesday night to reach the NIT title game at Madison Square Garden.
The Gophers aren’t in the NCAA Tournament. Instead in a weird bit of poetry, they’ll play Tubby Smith’s alma mater, High Point, on Tuesday night in the opening round of the NIT at Williams Arena.
The Big Ten Conference handed out its season honors on Monday with the league’s postseason tournament a few days away, and a pair of Gophers were recognized. Junior guards Andre Hollins and DeAndre Mathieu were both named to the All-Big Ten Honorable Mention team.
The Big Ten Conference announced the 2015 men’s basketball schedule for the teams around the league on Friday. Minnesota, like every other Big Ten team, will face five teams at home and on the road during the regular season.

Minnesota will be without leading scorer Andre Hollins for a while. Gophers coach Richard Pitino said Saturday that the junior shooting guard’s sprained left ankle was more severe than anticipated.
