Vikings Exercise 5th Year Options On Kalil, Smith

The Minnesota Vikings have exercised the fifth-year options on the contracts for safety Harrison Smith and left tackle Matt Kalil. The Vikings announced the decisions Monday, ensuring that both first-round picks from the 2012 draft will remain under team control through 2016.

Team Grades: Vikings Blow Two Touchdown Lead In Miami

The Minnesota Vikings took a two touchdown lead before surrendering the lead in the second half. The Vikings fell Sunday to the Miami Dolphins 37-35 on a blocked punt safety with 41 seconds remaining in the game. The Vikings offense was good enough to win, but the defense was bad. The special teams units made one mistake that gave the Dolphins the game in regulation.

Injury Report: Vikings To Be Without Four Starters Against The Lions

The Minnesota Vikings have seen their fair shares of injuries this season with four starters already on injured reserve. This week they will travel to Ford Field to take on the Detroit Lions without four more starters. Anthony Barr, Sharrif Floyd, Robert Blanton and Charlie Johnson all were declared out for the game. In total, the Vikings have nine players listed on the injury report. The Lions have nine players on their respective list as well.

The Minnesota Vikings defeated the New York Jets 30-24 on an 87-yard touchdown catch by Jarius Wright in overtime Sunday at TCF Bank Stadium. The Vikings scored a touchdown on the first and last play of the game. The Vikings offense was slightly better than average, while the defense was slightly below average. Teddy Bridgewater saved the Vikings in the game and may be the franchise quarterback they have sought now for some time.

Team Grades: Special Teams Leads The Vikings To Lopsided Win Over The Panthers

The Minnesota Vikings used two big special teams plays to defeat the Carolina Panthers 31-13 Sunday at TCF Bank Stadium. Adam Thielen and Everson Griffen returned a pair of blocked punts for touchdowns in the first half. Teddy Bridgewater threw a pair of touchdown passes to help the blowout. The defense struggled to stop the run, but made plays in the second half when they needed to.

The Minnesota Vikings will not have starting running back Jerick McKinnon Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. He has been bothered by a lower back injury that needs a week off to heal. A committee of Matt Asiata (who missed last week’s game due to a concussion), Joe Banyard and Ben Tate will get the carries in McKinnon’s place. The Vikings have 11 players listed on their injury report and the Panthers have seven players listed on theirs.

The Minnesota Vikings fell into a tie for last place in the NFC North Division with a 21-13 loss to the Chicago Bears Sunday at Soldier Field. Teddy Bridgewater threw a touchdown pass to Rhett Ellison in the first quarter, but threw an interception late in the fourth to seal the loss. The best Vikings unit were the special teams, but they were so-so.

Smith’s Ankle Injury Adds To Vikings’ List

Minnesota Vikings free safety Harrison Smith has an injured left ankle that had him with a walking boot and crutches Friday. Smith played through the injury Thursday at Green Bay, but he had the ankle taped several times throughout the night. Coach Mike Zimmer said Friday that Smith had an MRI test that showed no major damage but that it was too soon to determine his availability for the next game. The Vikings host Detroit Oct. 12.

Cordarrelle Patterson scored two touchdowns, one rushing and the other receiving for the only two Vikings scores. Harrison Smith missed eight games, but looked good in his return against the Philadelphia Eagles. The expectation was for him to be eased back into game shape. However, he played more snaps that any other Vikings safety. Chris Cook missed Sunday’s game against the Eagles with a knee injury.
