Wisconsin authorities and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have seized about 1,200 birds from a cockfighting ring in Polk and St. Croix counties. The ASPCA says law enforcement executed search warrants Tuesday at four western Wisconsin properties, detaining several people.
The Humane Society of the United States is accusing a hen processing plant in southern Minnesota of animal cruelty for allegedly drowning conscious hens in scalding hot water and performing other inhumane procedures.
A warrant has been issued for a Minneapolis man who was charged with cruelty to animals in connection with a cockfighting ring. Minneapolis Police and Minneapolis Animal Control seized several roosters, chickens, hens and cockfighting paraphernalia from a home at 3502 Newton Ave. N. in Minneapolis on Jan. 10, according to the Hennepin County Attorney’s office.
Five chickens live in artist Alicia Rheal’s backyard in Madison, Wis., and when they age out of laying eggs, they may become chicken dinner. More old hens are showing up at animal shelters, where workers increasingly respond to reports of abandoned poultry.
