Hockey Fans Cheer Team USA At Blaine’s Herb Brooks Center

Saturday’s Olympic hockey match-up between Team USA and Russia had many thinking back 34 years ago to the “Miracle on Ice” game at Lake Placid. So it was only fitting that a viewing party was held at the Herb Brooks Training Center at the Schwan’s Super Rink in Blaine, with dozens of hockey fans in attendance. “You get to see the best players,” said fan Brian Maloney. “It’s fun to watch them play the Russians with all the history and stuff.”

Hockey Legend Lou Nanne Sends Congrats To Team USA

USA’s Olympic hockey team beat Russia 3-2 in a stunning shootout Saturday. The arena in Sochi was packed to overflowing with fans of both nations, jovially posing for photos and comparing their colorful sweaters. The Russians waved hundreds of flags, blew horns and banged drums from the first moments of warm-ups. Hockey legend and former Golden Gopher Lou Nanne was team captain during the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France. He says Saturday’s game was quite a spectacle.

Hockey Day Celebrated Across Minnesota

The all-day celebration of Minnesota’s official sport is underway across the State of Hockey on Saturday. Outdoor hockey is at its finest at picturesque Handke Pit in Elk River. Mayor John Dietz says it’s a special venue with a lot of history. “You know, it’s kind of a rebirth of how the sport was born. It’s just a unique type of thing,” Dietz said.

St. Paul’s Johnson High Celebrates 100 Years Of Hockey

Since 1913, hockey players in St. Paul have been proudly putting on a jersey with the name “Johnson” stitched onto the front. Saturday, current and alumni players from Johnson High School laced up their skates to celebrate the program’s longevity. Johnson has gone to 22 state tournaments, winning four of them. One of the school’s most notable graduates is hockey legend Herb Brooks, who coached the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” Olympic hockey team.
