Gophers’ junior Sam Warning had a career night to help his team sweep Ohio State in Big Ten hockey on Saturday, and he received a weekly conference award on Tuesday for his efforts. Warning was named the league’s Second Star of the Week after netting a hat trick Saturday night in a 4-2 win over the Buckeyes.

Minnesota freshman Taylor Cammarata gave his home state’s biggest hockey crowd their only reason to cheer on Friday. Cammarata’s second period goal was the difference as Minnesota held off Ohio State 1-0 in the Hockey City Classic, played before an outdoor crowd of 45,021 at TCF Bank Stadium.
The cold didn’t stop thousands of hockey fans from filling TCF Bank Stadium for the Hockey City Classic. Friday afternoon’s match-up marks the first time that hockey has been played outside at the University of Minnesota in more than 80 years. The Gopher women took on the Mavericks of Minnesota State University – Mankato in the early evening, while the Gopher men will face off against Ohio State University at 8 p.m.
TCF Bank Stadium will hold an outdoor doubleheader Friday afternoon at the Hockey City Classic, featuring the Minnesota Gophers men’s and women’s hockey teams. The men’s team took to the ice late Thursday afternoon in preparation for Friday’s game. It was also a chance to see the ice at nightfall, checking out the sight lines under the lights. Coach Dan Lucia says there will be one other element in play that’s a bit more distracting than the waning sunlight.
The University of Minnesota is getting ready to host its first outdoor hockey game in modern history. The top-ranked Gopher men’s team will host the 2014 Hockey City Classic on Friday at TCF Bank Stadium.
On Friday night, “The Bank” will turn into “The Rink.” TCF Bank stadium, typically home to Gopher football, has been taken over by the state of hockey. It’s called the Hockey City Classic, and WCCO wanted to know what it took to create the rink, plus who gets to skate on it.
The football field at TCF Bank Stadium has been transformed into an ice rink for a 10-day festival known as the Hockey City Classic. The big event is slated for Friday, when the Gophers women and men’s hockey teams play a double header. That means thousands of people will be coming and going at the outdoor stadium, and the snow has got to go.
Minnesota Athletic Director Norwood Teague, along with Gopher men’s coach Don Lucia and women’s coach Brad Frost, will shoot pucks into the net and “light the lamp,” signifying the start of the 10-day festival. The ceremony is set for 5:30 p.m.

The University of Minnesota men’s hockey program released its television schedule Monday for the upcoming 2013-14 season, and 31 of its 36 regular season games will have a broadcast. It will be the first year for the Gophers and coach Don Lucia in the newly-formed Big Ten Conference.
The State of Hockey has waited long enough to host a game outdoors. Minnesota announced on Tuesday that it will play Ohio State in a game at the football team’s TCF Bank Stadium on Jan. 17 in the Hockey City Classic.
