Eden Prairie Police officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop Friday morning that ended with firearms drawn. The incident began when police received a 911 call from a man who said a passenger in another vehicle had pointed a gun at him on the highway near Shakopee.
Despite a scheduled construction closure, a major highway between the Twin Cities is open in both directions Saturday evening.
Parts of two major freeways are closed this weekend, complicating travel for motorists in the Twin Cities. Interstate 94 in St. Paul is closed in both directions between Highway 280 and Interstate 35E so that Xcel Energy crews can relocate power lines in the area. The posted detour routes motorists onto Highway 36.
Millions of drivers use metro freeways in Minneapolis and St. Paul every day to get to and from work, run errands or just shuttle around. In fact, MnDOT says the Interstate 35W/Interstate 94 interchange can see up to 180,000 people a day.
Minnesota State Patrol are reporting at least 135 crashes in the metro area due to the icy rain Tuesday. The state patrol said there have been 135 crashes and 40 spin-outs between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Some major roads across the metro are experiencing closures and detours this weekend. Southbound Interstate 35W will be closed from Highway 280 in Roseville, Minnesota to 4th Street SE in Minneapolis.
The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating a fatal crash in Dakota County. According to the state patrol, the incident occurred on southbound Minnesota State Highway 77 near Interstate 494 at around 5:50 a.m.
Charles Zelle is Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Transportation. He told WCCO Radio that managing the state’s transportation system is a bit of a conundrum. “Fifty percent of our roads are more than 50 years old,” Zelle said.
A three-year project to add another lane to Interstate 494 in Plymouth is officially underway, following a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning. The stretch of 494 from Highway 55 to the Fish Lake Interchange is the only part of 494 that didn’t have three lanes.
It’s the beginning of road closure time in the Twin Cities. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., expect delays both directions on I-494 between Highway 100 and Penn Avenue.
