A routine traffic stop has led to a lawsuit against a Robbinsdale Police officer. Melvin Newbern, a former Gopher’s basketball star, is suing Officer Brian Sloat, claiming the officer used excessive force in an arrest in early 2013. Dash-cam video captured on the morning of Feb. 13, 2013 shows Sloat putting Newbern through a field sobriety test after stopping him on suspicion of drunk driving.
The Minnesota Wild have placed left wing Zach Parise on injured reserve because of a bruised foot. The move was made Saturday. The Wild recalled goalie Johan Gustafsson from Iowa of the AHL to take Parise’s spot on the active roster, but Parise can be taken off injured reserve at any time. Parise has 15 goals and 12 assists in 37 games. He was hurt Nov. 25 at St. Louis and held out of the next game before returning to the ice four days later.
The Minnesota Vikings have ruled out running back Adrian Peterson for their final game of the season. The Vikings announced Saturday they downgraded Peterson from doubtful on the original injury report to out against Detroit Sunday, when the Vikings and Lions will play the last game at the Metrodome. Peterson sprained his right foot Dec. 8 at Baltimore and sat out the following week against Philadelphia.
Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has left Sunday’s game against Baltimore with an ankle injury. The injury occurred early in the second quarter on a snowy afternoon and on a wet field. His return is questionable.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder has been taken to the locker room under evaluation for concussion symptoms. Ponder took a hit to the head late in the second quarter Sunday against Chicago during a rushed third-down throw.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder says his injured left shoulder is ready to go and he wants to start against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Coach Leslie Frazier says he’ll wait until Saturday before making a decision. Ponder is still recovering from a dislocated left shoulder, but the right-handed quarterback was able to go through practice this week. He says he expects to be ready to go on Sunday. Ponder was injured in the third quarter of the Vikings’ last game against Washington. That was a Thursday night game, though, so he’s had a little extra time to treat the injury and prepare for the Seahawks.
Minnesota Twins star Joe Mauer is describing the extremely rough time he had, dealing with a season-ending concussion. The injury caused enough concern that it forced Mauer’s move from catcher to first base.
Minnesota Timberwolves center Ronny Turiaf is out indefinitely with a fractured right elbow. Turiaf was injured Friday night in Minnesota’s victory over Oklahoma City when he took a nasty spill after getting tangled up with Nick Collison.
More than 12,000 athletes will run the 26.2-mile course on Sunday as part of the 32nd-annual Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon — beginning in Minneapolis and ending St. Paul — in what’s called the most beautiful urban marathon in the country.
A Dassel-Cokato teenager is in stable condition at the hospital but having some complications as he recovers from suffering a brain injury on the field that almost killed him. “It was three weeks ago tomorrow that Luke was injured — we’ve had a lot of highs and a lot of lows,” mother Sara Nelson said.
Minnesota starting cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee that will keep him out for the rest of the season. Boddy-Calhoun was hurt last week at New Mexico State. Coach Jerry Kill revealed the injury on Tuesday. He said he expected Boddy-Calhoun to qualify for a medical redshirt from the NCAA, which would give him two more years of eligibility.
Minnesota Twins right-hander Samuel Deduno has soreness in his throwing shoulder. Deduno was pulled from his start against Kansas City on Thursday after three innings because of discomfort. He gave up four hits, three runs and a walk while striking out four. Deduno was bothered by biceps tendinitis around the shoulder earlier this month.
Minnesota Vikings coach Leslie Frazier says he is hopeful he will have defensive tackle Kevin Williams back from a knee injury in time for the season opener at Detroit. Williams was injured on a low block in a game against San Francisco on Sunday night.
Police discovered two dead bodies after responding to a shooting in south Minneapolis Sunday night. Minneapolis Police spokeswoman Cyndi Barrington said police received the call at 8:28 p.m. reporting shots fired in an alley along the 2600 block of 18th Avenue South.
Minnesota Twins All-Star catcher Joe Mauer has been given permission by a concussion specialist to begin a light exercise program. Mauer was placed on baseball’s seven-day concussion list earlier this week after he became dizzy during his pregame routine. The Twins sent him back to Minnesota from Detroit, and the 2009 AL MVP visited a specialist at the Mayo Clinic on Friday. “They were satisfied with where he’s at,” Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony said.
