Lake Mille Lacs has a reputation of being a premiere walleye fishing destination. But many who live along the lake say it should be known for much more. “Mille Lacs at the time when I was growing up was known more as the fishing lake, but that’s evolved over the years,” Mille Lacs Island Resort General Manager Jodi Kanera said.
After the state abruptly ended walleye fishing season on Lake Mille Lacs, there’s a new push to promote bass fishing there. Gov. Mark Dayton was fishing for bass Saturday after visiting Hunters Resort in Isle. This past week, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources also loosened some bass fishing restrictions on the lake.
The grandfather of one of the kids caught on a runaway school bus says he can’t believe no one was hurt. On Wednesday afternoon, dash cam video captured an Isle school bus driving erratically. At one point the bus goes in the ditch, and then somehow drives back out.
Eleven kids are OK after quick thinking stopped a runaway school bus Wednesday afternoon in Aitkin County. A sheriff’s deputy spotted the bus weaving when the bus driver was having a medical emergency and couldn’t pull over. “It was one of those things you don’t see every day,” Sheriff Scott Turner said.
Officials in northern Minnesota said state troopers had to use a tire deflation device on a school bus Wednesday afternoon after the driver suffered a medical emergency.

A former Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s deputy could face up to 33 years in prison after pleading guilty to criminal sexual conduct charges involving young boys that he took on fishing trips. According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Aaron Joseph Heuer of Isle, Minn. pleaded guilty in Otter Tail County District Court to four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Frank Vascellaro and Chris Shaffer are braving the frigid weather and getting out to Minnesota’s lovely, ice-covered lakes every Thursday and Friday until the middle of February. On Jan. 17, the duo headed out to the Mille Lacs town of Wahkon, which is about 90 miles north of the Twin Cities. Frank and Chris say Wahkon reminds them a little of Dorset, which they visited last spring, because of its tiny population and growing reputation for food. There are four restaurants all on about a one-block stretch!
A serious crash in an Isle, Minn. school bus garage was so bad that it caused a 2-hour delay for 600 students Tuesday morning. Someone walked away from a crash and police are worried that they may need medical care.
