Jacob Wetterling Resource Center
Wednesday marks two weeks since a Twin Cities fourth-grader never made it safely home from school.
Jacob Wetterling’s family would be celebrating his 37th birthday on Tuesday. Months after his abduction, a foundation was created to help families of missing or exploited children. Along with Jacob’s birthday, that foundation will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Tuesday.
Gov. Mark Dayton has proclaimed Saturday as Missing Children’s Day in Minnesota, part of a national effort to raise awareness about missing and exploited children.
The kind of kidnapping that captivates the country — and the media — is thankfully very rare. On average 115 children under the age of 18 are abducted by strangers each year, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
The Jacob Wetterling Resource Center is asking people to leave their porch lights on to honor the St. Joseph boy abducted 23 years ago.
