On Thursday, Minneapolis Fire Chief John Fruetel gave an eye opening report on workers compensation cost to the Minneapolis City Council’s Ways and Means Budget subcommittee. He said since 2012 the cost for workers compensation has nearly doubled; it’s now at $2.4 million a year.
A growing number of deadly fires in Minneapolis have officials preaching safety. Since the beginning of the year, 10 people, including five children, have died in fires in Minneapolis. Fire Chief John Fruetel says it’s been more than 35 years since the fire department has seen this many deaths.
Five children died after a Friday morning fire in a north Minneapolis duplex, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office. Crews were called to the 2800 block of Colfax Avenue North around 5 a.m.
Crews have finished searching the charred ruins of an apartment building on Cedar Avenue near downtown Minneapolis hours after pulling a second body from the structure. Crews began tearing apart the building at 514 Cedar Avenue South on Thursday and discovered the body of one person who didn’t make it out.
One woman was killed and four others were injured after a fire spread quickly through a south Minneapolis home early Saturday morning.
